ROLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

REPORTS TO: SCHOOL PRINCIPAL SERVING GRADES: K - 8

MISSION: Bronx Global Learning Institute for Girls Charter School, The Shirley Rodriguez-Remeneski School (BGLIG, pronounced Big League) will provide an exceptional education to young girls through dual language instruction in a technology-rich environment, while building on cultural heritage to foster leadership characteristics and strong values, promote self-confidence and create global leaders. Through highly motivated and accomplished teachers, our students will receive a standards-based, research-proven, technology-infused curriculum focusing on core subjects that will create a strong foundation for life-long learning.

Our intellectually challenging curriculum, enriched by a cultural perspective, a focus on successful women leaders, and a dual language program, will promote excellence in all areas: cognitive, social, emotional, and moral. Position Overview

At Bronx Global Learning Institute for Girls Charter School, Special Education Teachers understand and promote the school's mission, vision, objectives, and policies both within and outside the immediate school community. They are responsible for providing an instructional program and direct services that support the individual needs of all children in a dual language setting. They plan, deliver, and evaluate instructional outcomes, in accordance with the schools mission and values established by its charter.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):

Instructional Planning & Delivery

  • Plan, prepare and deliver Special Education lessons, both in large and small-group settings; 
  • Use data to refine curriculum and inform instructional practices for greater student outcomes.
  • Participate in collaborative curriculum development, grade-level activities, dual language, and school-wide functions.
  • Document all lesson plans, assignments, rubrics and other instructional materials and methods.
  • Use consistent schoolwide practices and a variety of individualized methods to engage all students in the classroom.
  • Use technology tools for instruction, planning and communication, and ensure student engagement.
  • Provide ongoing and timely feedback to students on their progress towards meeting expectations and achieving goals.
  • Re-teach as necessary to ensure that students have mastered the objectives.
  • Conduct approved assessments as scheduled.
  • Administer language assessments.
  • Create and manage a responsive learning environment that enables students to feel safe, to be creative, and to develop to their fullest potential.
  • Establish, model, practice and reinforce age appropriate rules and discipline using school approved procedures; create and consistently use individual behavioral management plans as needed.
  • Implement classroom procedures, systems and routines that provide structure for students.
  • Ensure smooth operation of all classroom instructional functions without exceptions.
  • Set personal and professional goals with administrators.

Student Support & School Culture

  • Communicate effectively and maintain strong relationships with students, families, colleagues, administrators, and with BGLIG families
  • Develop and use rubrics for evaluating student products and performances.
  • Oversee and assist with student arrival / dismissal.
  • Work closely with all members of the school community. Model citizenship, collaboration and support of one another.

Qualifications

  • Alignment to BGLIG's core values and mission.
  • Bachelors Degree required, preferably in Education, Spanish, ESL or Bilingual Education. Masters Degree in the field of education preferred.
  • NYS teaching certification, preferably NYS certificate in Spanish, ESL, or bilingual education.
  • Student teaching or equivalent experience required. Demonstrated ability to train other teachers to detect students who are limited English proficient.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations and statutes.
  • Experience in a high performing charter or district school preferred but not required.
  • Understanding of the basic principles of explicit instruction and student engagement; knowledge of theory and practice of student learning styles.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Common Core.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a diverse staff.
  • Fluent in Spanish, intermediate to advanced Spanish language skills preferred but not required.
  • Proficient in use of technology, including various G Suite teaching tools.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary based on experience and relevant certifications, BGLIG offers a free health care option and 401K match to all full-time employees. The salary range for this position is $70,000 - $110,000, with $70,000 representing a teacher in their first year of full-time post-undergraduate K-12 certified teaching experience; the higher end of the scale represents a teacher who has decades of experience in post-undergrad, full-time certified teaching positions within K-12.
