About the job Communications Officer

We are looking for an experienced Communications Officer to create and implement communications strategies that further our organisations goals - someone who can promote our brand, interact with the public and establish productive relationships with key stakeholders and policymakers. The successful candidate should be excited about developing and implementing plans to engage target audiences and spread the message about our strategic objectives. This candidate should have a proven track record of success in the communications sector or related fields, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review and update the organisation's Communications Strategy, owning the rollout to hold governments accountable for the protection, promotion and respect of SOGIESC rights in Africa
  • Develops content and directs creative execution to provide a consistent, targeted, and impactful message
  • Builds and maintains solid partnerships with stakeholders to better develop, coordinate, direct, and facilitate strategic communications designed to meet organisational goals
  • Designs campaigns to target specific audiences, placing an emphasis and discipline on campaign performance to help with recommendations for future programs
  • Researches and understands key business challenges, target audiences and environmental factors that impacts programs within the business and assigned departments
  • Develops an understanding of short- and long-term organisational goals and planned initiatives
  • Use appropriate communication tools and materials to influence regional and international human rights institutions and ensure that the issues pertinent to the diversity of members in the African region and effectively communicated to various stakeholders
  • Be a communication hub to provide support and link to members
  • Monitor and analyse SOGIESC global and continental communications and advocacy developments and debates
  • Help document project-based learnings and best practices
  • Provide communications and advocacy support at continental level working with members, project partners, allies and stakeholders
  • Contribute to growth and capacity development of members by strengthening communications tools as part of capacity building

Qualifications and Experience

  • 2+ years prior experience in a communications or marketing role
  • Understand the best practices of main social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, etc
  • Must possess exceptional writing skills and be able to compose engaging and accurate content
  • Strong communicator who works well independently and with a team
  • Superior time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of Adobe PhotoShop, InDesign, and Illustrator is an asset
  • Understanding of communications, public relations and marketing best practices
  • Ability to think strategically and identify ways to improve communication efforts
  • Must be resourceful and take initiative even when given minimal direction
