Job Summary:
The Deputy Project Director will support the Project Director in overseeing the planning, execution, and commissioning of large-scale renewable energy projects. This role ensures the project is delivered on schedule, within budget, and according to technical, environmental, and regulatory standards. The Deputy Project Director acts as a key decision-maker, managing multi-disciplinary teams, contractors, and stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities / Duties:
- Strategic & Operational Leadership
- Assist the Project Director in developing and executing the project strategy, roadmap, and execution plan.
- Lead project management meetings, progress reporting, and governance reviews.
- Provide guidance on risk management, mitigation strategies, and contingency planning.
- Technical Oversight
- Supervise engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors, ensuring adherence to project specifications and standards.
- Monitor technical performance for all renewable energy components (solar PV arrays, wind turbines, hydro facilities, storage systems).
- Oversee testing, commissioning, and operational readiness of renewable energy systems.
- Budget & Financial Management
- Support cost estimation, budget preparation, and expenditure tracking.
- Monitor project cash flow, cost overruns, and propose corrective measures.
- Liaise with finance teams, investors, and funders regarding financial reporting and compliance.
- Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Ensure compliance with international safety, environmental, and quality standards.
- Promote a strong HSE culture across all project sites and contractors.
- Oversee environmental and social impact mitigation measures, including community engagement and biodiversity conservation.
- Stakeholder & Government Relations
- Engage with government authorities, regulators, and local communities to ensure permits, licenses, and approvals are obtained and maintained.
- Maintain positive relationships with project investors, partners, and stakeholders.
- Quality Assurance & Control
- Establish QA/QC protocols for engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities.
- Ensure timely identification, reporting, and resolution of non-conformities.
- Project Controls & Reporting
- Implement and monitor project control systems (schedule, risk, change management).
- Prepare detailed progress reports, KPI dashboards, and risk assessments for senior management.
- Capacity Building & Local Content
- Promote local employment, training, and skills development initiatives.
- Support partnerships with local suppliers, SMEs, and technical institutions.
- Commissioning & Handover
- Develop and supervise commissioning plans for renewable energy systems.
- Ensure operational readiness and successful handover to operations and maintenance teams.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Masters degree in Renewable Energy, Electrical / Mechanical / Civil Engineering, or Project Management.
- Must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in project management of solar and/or thermal, hydro and/or other sources of energy
- Experience in the construction of PV plants with an aggregate peak capacity of more than 4 MW (comprising plants of more than 2 MW each), with at least one (1) PV plant more than 4MW.
- Strong understanding of EPC contracts, project finance, and risk management.
- Knowledge of local regulations, permitting, and environmental compliance.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Willingness to travel to project sites and work in remote or challenging environments.
