About the job Controls Engineer
Job Summary: The Controls Engineer is a key contributor responsible for managing controls engineering projects involving control system design, DCS/PLC programming, control panel design, instrumentation, check-out support, and start-up assistance. This role requires technical expertise, effective communication skills, and the ability to work in a multi-disciplined environment, interfacing with engineers, designers, and drafters.
Responsibilities:
- DCS/PLC Control System Design:
- Design, develop, and implement DCS/PLC control systems (logic software and hardware) to meet process requirements.
- Ensure compliance with local or government agency design/implementation codes.
- Control Panel and System Design Standards:
- Apply knowledge of control panel and system design standards and code practices for local or government agencies.
- Document Development:
- Develop documents detailing control configuration and design, including Theory/Description of operation and system implementation/acceptance test plans.
- System Design Calculations/Analysis:
- Perform system design calculations/analysis such as short circuit protection, harmonics, noise reduction/cancellation, power consumption, load flow, protective relay/circuit design, and safety system implementation (SIL rating).
- Hazard Analysis and Mitigation:
- Analyze system design for hazard analysis development and mitigation.
- AutoCAD Schematics:
- Develop schematics of control system configuration, wiring, network layout, and equipment panel layouts using AutoCAD.
- Start-Up Assistance:
- Assist with the initial start-up and debugging of integrated systems.
- Develop system documentation.
- Project Leadership:
- Act as technical lead on projects, guiding lower-level engineers, technicians, and contractors.
- Act as Project Manager on smaller projects ($50k to $250k), including development and execution of implementation plans, assigning work, developing schedules, and overseeing purchasing and subcontractor requirements.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering (Directly related experience may be substituted for a degree).
- Experience: 5+ years in Ethernet-based control systems, safety systems, instrumentation, components, logic programming, and DCS programming (e.g., DeltaV, Experion, 800xA).
- Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD, knowledge of contract documents and specifications, ability to collect field data, perform system design functions, planning, customer-focused, timely decision-making, informing, organizing, priority setting, problem-solving.
- Software Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Windows and Office environments.
Travel: Ability to travel up to 35%.

Working Conditions: The position may involve a variety of working conditions, including travel to client sites and hands-on work in various environments.
