Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (X‑Ray)
VA Portland Health Care System – Portland, OR Location: Portland, OR Schedule: Variable 8‑, 9‑, or 10‑hour shifts
Position Overview
The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist performs high‑quality general radiographic imaging to support the diagnosis and treatment of Veteran patients within the VA Portland Health Care System. This role operates a variety of X‑ray equipment, ensures adherence to radiation safety standards, and collaborates with radiologists and clinical staff in a fast‑paced hospital environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and specialized diagnostic radiographic procedures in accordance with VA protocols and physician orders.
- Operate digital radiography systems, portable X‑ray units, and fluoroscopy equipment (if applicable).
- Position patients accurately to obtain optimal images while ensuring comfort, dignity, and safety.
- Apply proper radiation protection techniques, including shielding and ALARA principles.
- Evaluate images for technical quality and completeness prior to submission for interpretation.
- Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Assist with room preparation, equipment checks, and infection control procedures.
- Collaborate with radiologists, nurses, and other healthcare personnel to support coordinated patient care.
- Provide portable imaging services to inpatient units, ED, ICU, and other clinical areas as needed.
Work Schedule
Personnel may be assigned to any eight (8), nine (9), or ten (10) hour shift depending on departmental needs:
- 8‑hour shifts: Typically five (5) days per week with a 30‑minute lunch/dinner period.
- 9‑hour shifts: Typically a rotating four (4) day / five (5) day workweek, with a 30‑minute lunch/dinner period.
- 10‑hour shifts: Typically a four (4) day workweek.
Additional scheduling expectations include:
- Rotating weekends and holiday shifts
- Variable hours depending on service coverage
- Overtime, On‑Call, and Call‑Back duty as needed, including emergent situations
Qualifications
- ARRT certification in Radiography (R) required.
- Current BLS certification.
- Minimum 1–2 years of recent X‑ray experience in a hospital or acute‑care setting preferred.
- Strong knowledge of radiographic positioning, radiation safety, and imaging protocols.
- Experience with portable radiography and trauma imaging preferred.
- Familiarity with PACS and EMR systems (EPIC experience a plus).
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a busy clinical environment.
- Excellent communication, patient‑care, and critical‑thinking skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, move, and position patients and imaging equipment.
