Computed Tomography (CT) Technologist

VA Syracuse Health Care System – Syracuse, NY

Schedule: Variable 8, 9, or 10hour shifts

Position Overview: 

The CT Technologist performs high-quality CT imaging examinations to support the diagnosis and treatment of Veteran patients within the VA Syracuse Health Care System. This role operates multislice CT scanners, follows established imaging protocols, ensures patient safety, and collaborates closely with radiologists and clinical staff in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and advanced CT examinations, including contrast and
    non-contrast studies, trauma imaging, angiographic studies, and specialized
    protocols.
  • Operate CT scanners, power injectors, and related imaging equipment with
    proficiency and accuracy. 
  • Review patient history, verify exam indications, and screen for contraindications
    such as contrast allergies or renal impairment.
  • Position patients accurately to obtain optimal diagnostic images while ensuring
    comfort and safety.
  • Administer IV contrast material in accordance with VA policies and safety
    guidelines. 
  • Evaluate images for technical quality and completeness prior to radiologist
    interpretation.
  • Maintain accurate documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR) and PACS.
  • Perform equipment warmups, quality control checks, and routine maintenance
    tasks.
  • Collaborate with radiologists, nurses, and other healthcare personnel to support
    coordinated patient care.
  • Provide compassionate, professional patient interaction and education
    throughout the imaging process.

Work Schedule: 

Personnel may be assigned to any eight (8), nine (9), or ten (10) hour shift depending on departmental needs:

  • Additional scheduling expectations include:
  • Rotating weekends and holiday shifts
  • Variable hours depending on service coverage
  • Overtime, On Call, and Call back duty as needed, including emergent situations

Qualifications: 

  • ARRT certification in Radiography (R) required; ARRT (CT) certification strongly
  • preferred or required per VA standards.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of recent CT experience in a hospital or acutecare setting
  • preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of CT protocols, cross-sectional anatomy, radiation safety, and
  • contrast administration.
  • Experience with trauma imaging and highacuity patient care preferred.
  • Familiarity with PACS and EMR systems (EPIC experience a plus).
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and maintain accuracy in a
  • fast paced clinical environment.
  • Excellent communication, patientcare, and critical thinking skills.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to lift, move, and position patients and imaging equipment.
  • Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and occasional pushing/pulling of portable equipment.
