Position Title & Basic Details

We're looking for a Lead Controls Engineer based in [State]. This is a Full-Time position requiring 3–7+ years of relevant experience. A Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering is strongly preferred.

Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs as needed and perform work that includes standing, walking, bending, and sitting for extended periods. Must maintain proper vision, situational awareness, and have a working knowledge of English.

Overview

In this role, you'll be responsible for overseeing the production of various types of equipment and systems. A key competency is the ability to research, test, implement, and analyze improvements for system and process effectiveness.

Success in this role will be demonstrated by meeting safety and quality standards while driving efficiency and production improvements.

You will be working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment focused on innovation, continuous improvement, and advanced automotive technologies, including intelligent vision systems, vehicle access systems, and lighting technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and train Controls Technicians in programming new launches and troubleshooting production equipment issues
  • Write and edit machine control programs to interface process equipment and safely operate production equipment (e.g., program light guards) while avoiding malfunctions
  • Conceive, plan, design, develop, and implement new systems and/or processes
  • Define scope, plan, organize, lead, and direct technical work for new and existing processes and systems
  • Evaluate current manufacturing system hardware/software, equipment, and controls; resolve problems and recommend improvements (including cameras, sensors, and mechanical systems with PLCs)
  • Create and lead projects to increase equipment uptime using automation to control cost and improve efficiency
  • Work with internal and external resources to ensure all project needs and expectations are met
  • Support continuous improvement efforts to reduce costs and comply with automotive specifications
  • Assume responsibility for machine safety and equipment within the assigned area
  • Provide maintenance troubleshooting and production support
  • Supervise and/or provide work direction to other staff as needed
  • Learn and support vision systems such as Keyence, Cognex, and Datalogic
  • Train maintenance staff on new equipment and updates to existing equipment
  • Upgrade used equipment to improve efficiency and performance
  • Perform other duties as necessary to achieve departmental goals

Safety and Environmental Responsibilities

  • Perform all work in compliance with safety and environmental policies and procedures, as well as all federal, state, and local laws
  • Understand and follow environmental and safety management systems, including emergency response procedures
  • Report any unsafe condition or action to a supervisor
  • Report any work-related injury within 8 hours
  • Never operate machinery without proper training and authorization
  • Never remove, displace, or interfere with safety safeguards
  • Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) where required
  • Understand responsibilities related to environmental programs, including ISO14001
  • Understand actual or potential environmental consequences when deviating from work instructions
  • Attend all required Environmental, Health, and Safety training

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering preferred
  • 3–7+ years of work experience in a related field
  • Experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley required)
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley and Fanuc robotics strongly preferred
  • Experience with Ethernet/IP devices, printers, barcode scanners, and PCs preferred
  • Lead support in defining equipment standards for both new and existing equipment
  • Oversee and direct maintenance of all controls and documentation related to production equipment
  • Establish and maintain all equipment controls and electrical systems required to support manufacturing
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to determine customer needs and develop project specifications and scope
  • Ability to interpret and implement technical specifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with vision systems such as Keyence, Cognex, and Datalogic
  • Experience with Visual Basic, Python, or Ignition
  • Ability to upgrade and optimize existing equipment for improved efficiency
