Job Description:

Position Overview: As the Head Utility on a cruise ship, you will play a crucial role in overseeing the efficient operation of the utility department. Your responsibilities will include managing a team of utility personnel, coordinating maintenance and repair activities, and ensuring the smooth operation of essential ship systems. You will work closely with various departments to ensure the availability of utilities, such as electricity, water, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), to meet the needs of guests and crew members. Your leadership, technical skills, and attention to detail will contribute to the safe and comfortable environment onboard.

Responsibilities:

  1. Team Management:

    • Lead and supervise a team of utility personnel, including utility engineers and technicians.
    • Assign duties and responsibilities to the utility team, ensuring proper coverage and workload distribution.
    • Train and mentor utility staff, providing guidance and support.
    • Monitor performance, provide feedback, and address any performance or behavior issues.
  2. Utility Systems Operation:

    • Ensure the proper operation and maintenance of ship systems related to electricity, water supply, HVAC, plumbing, and other utilities.
    • Coordinate with the Engineering department to monitor and optimize utility consumption and efficiency.
    • Oversee the monitoring of utility systems, including alarms and control panels, to identify and address any abnormalities or malfunctions.
    • Collaborate with the relevant departments to ensure the availability of utilities for guest cabins, public areas, galley, and crew facilities.
  3. Maintenance and Repairs:

    • Coordinate and prioritize maintenance and repair activities for utility systems.
    • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules and procedures.
    • Supervise and assist in troubleshooting and resolving utility-related issues.
    • Coordinate with external contractors, as necessary, for specialized repairs or equipment servicing.
  4. Safety and Compliance:

    • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards related to utility operations.
    • Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments to identify and address potential hazards.
    • Implement and enforce safety procedures and guidelines for utility personnel.
    • Participate in safety drills and emergency response training.
  5. Inventory and Supplies Management:

    • Maintain accurate inventory records of utility-related equipment, spare parts, and supplies.
    • Coordinate with the Procurement department to ensure sufficient stock levels.
    • Monitor and control utility-related expenses, seeking cost-saving opportunities when possible.
  6. Communication and Collaboration:

    • Collaborate with other ship departments, such as Housekeeping, Food and Beverage, and Entertainment, to ensure the availability and proper functioning of utilities.
    • Communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and external contractors to address utility-related issues and coordinate repair activities.
    • Participate in departmental and ship-wide meetings and briefings.
  7. Administrative Duties:

    • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment performance.
    • Prepare reports and documentation related to utility operations.
    • Assist in the development and management of the department's budget.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in utility operations and management, preferably in a maritime or cruise ship setting, is required.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent technical knowledge of ship utility systems, including electricity, water supply, HVAC, and plumbing.
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Flexibility to work long hours and on various shifts, as required on a cruise ship.
  • Basic computer skills for record keeping and reporting.
