Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced RPG Developer (IBM i) to join the IT team of a client operating in the retail sector.

In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining, enhancing, and developing IBM i applications that support essential business operations, including merchandise management, HR, accounting, warehouse management, and Business Intelligence (BI).

The ideal candidate has extensive hands-on experience with ILE RPG, SQL development, and database modeling, along with practical knowledge of RDi and familiarity with VS Code. You will contribute to the evolution of existing applications, design new software solutions, and develop integrations with external systems and data platforms.

Strong German communication skills at C1 level are required, as the role involves daily interaction with business and IT stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain, enhance, and further develop existing standard and customized IBM i applications supporting core retail business processes.
• Design technical concepts for new software solutions and take ownership of their implementation.
• Develop and maintain interfaces between IBM i applications, external systems, and the client's data integration platform.
• Implement and maintain solutions using ILE RPG, including procedures and service programs.
• Develop SQL functions and stored procedures, ensuring efficient database operations.
• Design and maintain database structures through advanced SQL data modeling.
• Use RDi as the primary development environment, with familiarity with VS Code.
• Manage source code versioning and development workflows using CMOne.
• Collaborate closely with business and IT stakeholders, discussing requirements and technical solutions in German.
• Leverage AI tools to improve development productivity, automate repetitive tasks, and support technical decision-making, while validating generated outputs and ensuring the quality of delivered solutions.

Required Skills & Experience

• Strong, hands-on experience in RPG development, particularly ILE RPG.
• Practical knowledge of RPG procedures and service programs.
• Experience developing SQL functions and SQL procedures.
• Advanced knowledge of SQL database modeling.
• Experience working with the IBM i (AS/400 / iSeries) platform.
• Practical experience with RDi (Rational Developer for i).
• Familiarity with Visual Studio Code (VS Code).
• German language proficiency at C1 level, required for daily professional communication.
• Regular use of AI tools to improve productivity, automate repetitive activities, and support problem-solving.
• Ability to use AI tools responsibly, including writing effective prompts, critically reviewing generated content, understanding their limitations, and taking responsibility for the final output.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Nice to Have

• IBM i-related professional certifications.
• Experience with CMOne for source code management and version control.
• Familiarity with modern middleware and integration platforms, such as Lobster or similar solutions.
• Previous experience in the retail industry, particularly with ERP, merchandise management, or warehouse management systems.
