z/OS Systems Hardware Specialist | Mainframe Support & Upgrades

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced z/OS Systems Hardware Specialist to support and maintain Mainframe Processor operations within a multi-LPAR, multi-site Sysplex environment. The role involves hardware maintenance, system upgrades, troubleshooting, and performance optimization to ensure high availability and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mainframe Hardware Support & Maintenance:
    • Oversee the UK Mainframe Processor estate in a multi-LPAR Sysplex environment.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve day-to-day hardware incidents and system failures.
  • Processor & Microcode Upgrades:
    • Lead upgrades of IBM Mainframe Processors to the latest generations (z14, z15, z16).
    • Upgrade Microcode levels on Mainframe Processors, Coupling Facilities, HMCs, and TKEs.
  • System Configuration & Optimization:
    • Build and activate IODF/IOCDS configurations for storage and system updates.
    • Update PR/SM definitions via HMC.
  • Collaboration & Risk Management:
    • Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure system efficiency and reliability.
    • Maintain compliance with risk management and regulatory processes.
  • Out-of-Hours Support:
    • Provide after-hours support for critical hardware implementations and upgrades.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience in Mainframe hardware support and configuration.
  • Strong knowledge of IBM z/OS systems and tools, including:
    • HMC, HCD, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, JCL, CHPID Mapping Tool, JES2.
  • Hands-on experience with IBMz processor generations (z14, z15, z16).
  • Sysplex and Coupling Facility expertise.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to a broad audience.

Preferred Skills (Not Mandatory but Advantageous)

  • Automation, GDPS, Rexx, and CLIST scripting.
  • OSA-ICC definition and configuration.
  • Basic understanding of DWDM technology.
  • Familiarity with Disk/Tape infrastructure.

Work Environment & Flexibility

  • Location: Sheffield or Wakefield.
  • Hybrid Work Model: Work-from-home flexibility with on-site presence when required.
