z/OS Systems Hardware Specialist | Mainframe Support & Upgrades

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced z/OS Systems Hardware Specialist to support and maintain a multi-LPAR, multi-site Sysplex mainframe environment. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in IBM Mainframe Processors, ensuring their operation, maintenance, and continuous upgrades as technology advances.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mainframe Hardware Management: Maintain and support the UK Mainframe Processor estate within a multi-LPAR Sysplex environment.
  • Processor Upgrades: Lead IBM Mainframe Processor upgrades to the latest generations (z14, z15, z16).
  • Microcode & Configuration Updates:
    • Upgrade Microcode levels on Mainframe Processors, Coupling Facilities, HMCs, and TKEs.
    • Manage IODF/IOCDS configurations to support Storage estate changes and key projects.
    • Update PR/SM definitions via HMC.
  • Incident Troubleshooting & Problem Resolution: Provide day-to-day incident support and problem resolution for hardware-related issues.
  • Out-of-Hours Support: Provide support for hardware implementations and project-related changes outside standard business hours when required.
  • Risk & Compliance: Ensure all operations align with risk management protocols and regulatory processes.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with stakeholders across business areas, ensuring clear communication and efficient problem-solving.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience in Mainframe hardware support and configuration.
  • Strong knowledge of z/OS and IBM Mainframe tools, including:
    • HMC, HCD, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, JCL, CHPID Mapping Tool, JES2.
  • Expertise in IBM Processor generations: z14, z15, z16.
  • Sysplex and Coupling Facility knowledge.
  • Excellent problem determination and troubleshooting skills.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical details to diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to develop strong networks across business areas.

Preferred Skills (Not Mandatory but Advantageous)

  • Automation, GDPS, Rexx, and CLIST scripting.
  • OSA-ICC definition and configuration.
  • Basic understanding of DWDM technology.
  • Familiarity with Disk/Tape infrastructure.

Work Environment & Flexibility

  • Location: Sheffield or Wakefield UK.
