Job Summary
The Senior Project Engineer (Roadway) is responsible for leading the engineering design team in development and execution of projects from initial concept through successful completion. This role involves coordinating with engineering teams, contractors, and vendors to achieve project goals efficiently, on time, and within budget while maintaining the highest quality standards.
This role involves planning and designing roadway projects for local municipalities, including FDOT-funded projects. Work may include complete streets/streetscapes, roadway widening, resurfacing, bicycle and pedestrian paths, intersections, traffic signals, roundabouts, and other roadway improvements. Projects can range from local streets to major highways, covering all phases from early planning to final design.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Work closely with clients, engineers, technical staff, and managers across multiple disciplines to deliver high-quality projects on time and within budget
- Partner with Project Managers, Senior Engineers, and multidisciplinary teams to assess risks, develop solutions, and resolve complex project challenges
- Lead the preparation of technical specifications, review design drawings, and oversee construction administration as the Engineer of Record
- Perform roadway design tasks including alignments (horizontal and vertical), typical sections, drainage/hydraulic analysis, erosion control planning, quantity calculations, cost estimating, and overall plan production
- Develop project action plans, assign resources, and track progress to ensure timely and efficient project delivery
- Produce construction plans, details, specifications, and cost estimates supported by thorough engineering calculations
- Research design alternatives and provide sound technical recommendations
- Coordinate with contractors, clients, construction staff, and subconsultants to ensure quality deliverables and regulatory compliance
- Assist with Marketing/Business Development pursuits (RFP/RFQ)
Leadership Duties
- Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff
- Lead team meetings and coordinate cross-discipline collaboration
- Provide direction on resource management, task prioritization, and technical problem-solving
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and training efforts for engineering staff
Required Skills/Abilities
- Proficiency in MS Office with familiarity in Deltek Vantagepoint, Smartsheet, or similar project management platforms
- Proven ability to lead, motivate, and inspire a team
- Strong collaboration skills with multidisciplinary team experience
- Strong knowledge of FDOT Design Manual, Design Standards, the Florida Greenbook, MUTCD, and current design and construction practices
- Detail-oriented, quality-focused, reliable, and self-motivated
Education and Experience
- B.S. in Civil Engineering with a P.E. License in the state of Florida (ability to obtain additional state licensure through reciprocity is a plus)
- At least 10+ years of relevant experience in a consulting engineering firm or government agency
- Familiarity with AutoCAD (Civil3D) and/or OpenRoads Designer is a plus
