About the job Systems Engineer Specialist (12-month contract)
We are seeking a highly skilled Systems Engineer Specialist to join a leading banking institution based in Sandton on a 12-month hybrid contract. The successful candidate will provide advanced technical expertise and support across enterprise infrastructure and systems within a highly regulated financial services environment.
The role focuses on ensuring the stability, performance, availability, and security of mission-critical banking systems by managing the installation, configuration, optimisation, and maintenance of both internally developed and externally supplied hardware and systems software.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install, configure, and maintain enterprise systems software and hardware in a banking environment
- Perform advanced troubleshooting and resolution of complex infrastructure and system issues
- Conduct system tuning, performance optimisation, and capacity management for high-availability environments
- Manage patches, upgrades, and lifecycle maintenance of operating systems and related platforms
- Ensure compliance with banking security, risk, and governance standards
- Support integration across core banking systems, middleware, and enterprise applications
- Monitor system performance and proactively identify risks to stability and availability
- Collaborate with infrastructure, security, network, and application teams to deliver resilient solutions
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, configurations, and operational procedures
- Participate in standby/on-call rotations to support 24/7 banking operations where required
Minimum Experience:
- 5–8+ years' experience in Systems Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, or similar technical roles
- Proven experience supporting large-scale enterprise environments (preferably banking or financial services)
- Hands-on experience with production systems, high availability environments, and mission-critical platforms
- Experience working in ITIL-aligned operational environments (incident, problem, and change management)
- Demonstrated experience in system upgrades, patching, and environment maintenance
- Exposure to hybrid environments (on-premise and cloud integrations is advantageous)
- Experience working in 24/7 operational or shift/on-call support environments
Nice to Have / Preferred Certifications:
Candidates holding one or more of the following certifications will be at an advantage:
- Linux Certifications (Red Hat Certified System Administrator – RHCSA, RHCE)
- Microsoft Certifications (Azure Administrator Associate, Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate)
- VMware Certifications (VMware Certified Professional – VCP)
- AWS Certifications (AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate or AWS SysOps Administrator)
- ITIL Certification (ITIL Foundation or higher)
- CompTIA Certifications (Network+, Security+, Linux+)
- Cisco Certifications (CCNA or higher – advantageous for infrastructure exposure)
- Any certification in cloud, infrastructure, or enterprise systems management
