Principal Hoists & Production Shafts

 Job Description:

Act as the senior technical authority responsible for finalising an underground mining infrastructure design, with particular focus on moving material from the mine face through to the shaft.

Initially lead design completion before transitioning into project package management, execution and operational handover.

Company

A major international mining company developing a large scale, mechanised underground polymetallic operation in Southern Africa. The project is progressing through phased expansion and requires rigorous integration between mine planning, shaft systems, materials handling and supporting engineering disciplines.

Accountabilities

  • Lead the development and finalisation of the underground mining infrastructure design.
  • Provide technical leadership for the complete material movement system from the mine face through to the shaft.
  • Oversee the integration of shaft logistics, hoisting systems, shaft stations, ore passes, silos, loading arrangements and rock handling systems.
  • Ensure infrastructure is aligned with the mine plan, production schedule, bulk mining method and required operating capacity.
  • Review mining simulations to validate material flow, equipment movement, shaft capacity and production assumptions.
  • Identify system bottlenecks and develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Review and challenge designs, calculations, specifications and deliverables produced by consultants and engineering partners.
  • Coordinate interfaces across mining, shaft systems, materials handling, mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, ventilation and underground services.
  • Ensure designs address constructability, operability, maintainability, reliability, safety and future production requirements.
  • Lead technical design reviews, risk assessments, constructability reviews, operability reviews and value engineering activities.
  • Develop scopes of work and support technical evaluations, bid assessments, contractor selection and procurement decisions.
  • Manage selected packages through detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning and operational handover.
  • Monitor technical, schedule and interface risks and provide clear recommendations to project leadership.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • Substantial hard rock underground and bulk mining experience.
  • Direct experience designing and integrating underground mine infrastructure.
  • Strong expertise in shaft logistics, hoisting, ore pass and silo design and underground rock handling systems.
  • Experience using mining simulation and reviewing mine design outputs.
  • Project execution experience within an operator, consultancy, engineering contractor or comparable environment.
  • Sufficient technical depth to challenge detailed engineering work and assumptions.
  • Decisive and technically credible, with confidence operating as an internal authority within a complex project environment.
