I. Job description / Profile

The focus is on the highly specialised mechanical manufacturing and assembly of large generators. Mechanical engineers in generator construction are responsible for the mechanical assembly of the core components of global power plants and work in compliance with the strictest quality and safety standards.

Responsibilities & Manufacturing Focus Precision assembly and mechanical installation of large components in accordance with technical drawings and parts lists. Stator construction & lamination: Laminating stators for generators and manufacturing laminated steel packs for turbogenerators. This involves manual assembly, including

precise dimensional checks and adjustment work. Hydraulic pressing: Professional hydraulic pressing of the laminated cores to ensure the structural integrity of the generator cores. Heavy-duty assembly: Assembly of large components and their sub-assemblies. Fitting of bearing shields, air-water coolers, air guide shields and generator covers. Handling & alignment: Handling, positioning and precise alignment of large machine components and heavy-duty components (stators, rotors). Installation of small parts: Assembly of all small mechanical parts and instruments, as well as the installation of electromechanical interfaces. Documentation & reading of plans: Confident reading, interpretation and implementation of complex manufacturing drawings and technical parts lists as the basis for error-free assembly. Plant & crane operation: Handling of tools and equipment used in mechanical engineering, as well as safe operation of overhead cranes (crane licence required in Austria).

Repair: Carrying out disassembly, assembly and reassembly work on machine components as part of production and quality assurance. The position requires a completed apprenticeship as a mechanical engineering technician (or equivalent) as well as sound knowledge of pneumatics and hydraulics.


II. Professional requirements

To ensure legal compliance when applying via the Red-White-Red Card (Austria's skilled worker scheme for shortage occupations), the following criteria must be strictly met. The procedure is based on a points system. To be approved as a skilled worker in a shortage occupation, a minimum of 55 out of 90 points must be achieved: State-recognised training: Proof of a completed, minimum 3-year vocational training course in your home country (e.g. mechanical engineering technician, mechatronics) with an official diploma. Alternatively, a 4-year Bachelor's degree in Mechatronic Engineering or Mechanical Engineering is also accepted as proof of qualification. Relevant professional experience: A minimum of 3 years' practical professional experience in the fields of mechanical engineering or mechatronics, or comparable technical fields, is required. This experience must be substantiated by detailed employment references or social security records (e.g. SSS/PhilHealth in the Philippines).



Language qualification (visa & work):

o Certificate: Proof of German language proficiency at B1 level through an officially recognised language certificate (e.g. ÖSD, Goethe-Institut) to obtain the necessary points for the RWR card.

o Communication: Good German language skills are essential for operational safety and team communication in generator production. Integrated technical language training: Specific training in technical language is part of

the onboarding process. This covers all safety-related terms (e.g. safety regulations in generator construction), technical process steps and the correct terminology for special tools and machinery. Additional qualifications: A verifiable crane licence (indoor crane) and experience in reading complex circuit diagrams and technical drawings are key requirements for day- to-day work on the generator and should be obtained in Austria.

III. Technical skills (hard skills)

Materials science: Knowledge of the physical properties of materials and consumables in mechanical engineering.

Reading technical drawings: Confident interpretation of complex manufacturing drawings and circuit diagrams. Implementation must be carried out precisely in accordance with technical bills of materials to meet the required tolerances in generator construction (hydropower).

Machine & tool operation: Handling of the special tools and machines used in generator construction. This also includes the competent use of measuring equipment to check dimensional accuracy and electrical continuity. Mechanical manufacturing technology: Mastery of assembly processes in heavy machinery construction, particularly in the layering and alignment of laminated stacks.

Hydraulics & Pneumatics: In-depth knowledge and practical application of hydraulic pressing techniques and pneumatic systems on large-scale machinery. Measurement & Alignment Technology: Experience in carrying out dimensional checks and high-precision alignment work on components weighing several tonnes. Reading technical drawings: Confident interpretation of manufacturing drawings and parts lists. Implementation strictly in accordance with technical specifications to ensure compliance with tolerances (hydropower).


Detailed description of hard skills (background knowledge)

Mechanical manufacturing technology (stator laminations): Unlike general mechanical engineering, this requires patience and extreme care. 'Lamination' involves stacking thousands of thin metal sheets in an offset pattern. An error in the lamination process leads to hotspots during subsequent operation.

Hydraulics & Pneumatics (pressing process): The sheet metal stacks must be pressed under enormous pressure before they are finally fixed in place. The technician must operate the hydraulic presses in such a way that the pressure is distributed evenly to prevent deformation of the housing.

Measurement & Alignment Technology: For components with a diameter of several metres, thermal expansion and self-weight factors must be taken into account during measurement. The technician must know how to measure 'large' components without compromising on precision.

Reading Drawings (Hydropower Standards): The drawings at ANDRITZ contain specific symbols for fits and surface finishes that are critical in power plant construction. The exact implementation of tolerances determines the service life of the bearings and the entire generator.

Interdisciplinary knowledge: A mechanical engineer at ANDRITZ works closely with the electricians. They must understand where mechanical components might affect electrical creepage distances and how earthing connections can be securely connected mechanically.
