About the job Taper (Drywall Finisher)
Reports to: Finishing Supervisor / Site Foreman
Position Overview:
The Taper 1 works under the supervision of the Finishing Supervisor and is responsible for sealing joints between drywall panels using tape and compound to prepare wall and ceiling surfaces for painting or other finishes. The taper ensures a smooth, seamless surface and upholds quality and aesthetic standards across all construction finishing works.
Responsibilities

Apply sealing compound between drywall joints using hand tools or mechanical applicators.

Press paper or fiberglass tape into compound to seal joints and seams.

Spread and feather finishing compound over tape to create smooth surfaces.

Apply successive coats of compound, sanding each coat as it dries to achieve a polished surface.

Patch holes, cracks, and other imperfections in walls or ceilings.

Match texture and finish styles as specified in project design.

Inspect finished surfaces to verify adherence to specifications.

Ensure all surfaces are paint-ready, level, and blemish-free.

Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas.

Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all safety regulations on site.

Coordinate with other trades (e.g., drywall installers, painters) for seamless workflow.

Properly clean and store tools and materials after each shift.

Communicate material or tool shortages to supervisors in a timely manner.

Document work progress and issues as needed.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Certifications:

High School certificate preferred.

Technical training in plastering, finishing, or drywall installation is an advantage.

Valid ID or drivers license required.
-
Health and Safety certification (e.g., OSHA, NCA) is preferred.
Experience:

2+ years of verifiable experience as a taper or drywall finisher.

Demonstrated skill in surface preparation and joint finishing.
Skills:

Expert knowledge of joint compound mixing, application, and sanding.

Ability to work on ladders, scaffolds, or in confined spaces.

Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.

Familiarity with tools such as taping knives, hawks, sanding blocks, and corner finishers.

Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings is a plus.

Punctual, reliable, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
Other Requirements:

Physical strength to lift materials up to 30 pounds.

Exposure to dust, noise, and indoor/outdoor construction environments.

Willing to work extended hours or weekends as project demands.

Capable of standing, kneeling, bending, and climbing for prolonged periods.
