Position Overview:
The Painter 1 works under the supervision of the Finishing Supervisor and is responsible for the preparation, painting, and finishing of surfaces on structures, walls, ceilings, steelworks, and fixtures. This role ensures all surfaces are coated to project standards visually sharp, weather-resistant, and durable in line with safety, environmental, and aesthetic guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare surfaces for painting by washing, scraping, sanding, filling, and priming.

  • Apply paint, varnish, sealer, or stain to interior and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment.

  • Mix and match paint, stain, or varnish to achieve desired color and consistency.

  • Execute multi-coat applications (primer, undercoat, topcoat) as specified in project scope.

  • Protect surrounding areas with drop cloths, masking tape, and other protective measures.

  • Inspect surfaces after each coat and correct defects like bubbles, streaks, or drips.

  • Use appropriate finishing techniques for wood, metal, drywall, concrete, or plaster surfaces.

  • Maintain tools, brushes, sprayers, and other equipment in clean working condition.

  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, or elevated platforms in accordance with safety procedures.

  • Assist in selecting paint types, textures, or special coatings based on environmental and project needs.

  • Comply with all site safety standards including PPE use and proper handling of solvents or chemicals.

  • Clean and dispose of hazardous materials and containers in an environmentally safe manner.

  • Collaborate with carpenters, plasterers, and site managers to ensure smooth project flow.

  • Maintain accurate records of materials used and surfaces completed.

  • Perform other finishing or labor tasks as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certifications:

  • KCSE certificate preferred.

  • Technical certification or training in painting and surface finishing is an advantage.

  • Valid national ID or drivers license.

  • Health & Safety training (e.g., OSHA, NCA) preferred.

  • Specialized training in spray-painting or epoxy coating is a plus.

Experience:

  • 2+ years of proven experience in residential, commercial, or industrial painting.

  • Experience with multiple surface types (masonry, metal, wood, drywall).

  • Familiarity with epoxy, enamel, waterproofing systems, and textured finishes is an advantage.

Skills:

  • Excellent eye for color, detail, and finish consistency.

  • Skilled in brush, roller, and spray application methods.

  • Knowledge of surface prep tools and paint chemistry.

  • Understanding of weather resistance, durability, and safety in coating application.

  • Ability to follow plans, instructions, and finish schedules precisely.

  • Good time management and teamwork skills.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be physically fit to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25kg.

  • Able to work in heat, humidity, heights, or confined spaces.

  • Willingness to work weekends, late hours, or extended shifts as per project schedule.

  • Must follow strict health, safety, and environmental protocols.
