Reports to: Site Foreman / Roofing Supervisor Position Overview: The Roofer 1 works under the supervision of the Roofing Supervisor and is responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of roofing systems. This includes both flat and pitched roofs using materials such as shingles, tiles, metal sheets, waterproof membranes, or bitumen. The roofer ensures the roof is structurally sound, weatherproof, and completed in accordance with design specifications, manufacturer guidelines, and safety regulations.

Responsibilities This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.

Measure, cut, and fit roofing materials according to blueprints and site specifications.

Install roofing systems including timber trusses, battens, underlay, sheeting, tiles, shingles, waterproof membranes, and flashing.

Inspect problem roofs to determine the best repair procedures.

Repair leaks, broken tiles, corroded sheet joints, and deteriorated waterproofing systems.

Install and seal gutters, eaves, downpipes, skylights, vents, and roof hatches.

Apply weatherproof coatings and bituminous materials on flat roofs or roof decks.

Work safely at heights using scaffolding, harnesses, roof ladders, and safety lines.

Identify structural issues like rotten timbers, cracked trusses, or misaligned rafters and report them to supervisors.

Maintain a clean and safe workspace, removing debris, nails, and offcuts regularly.

Coordinate with carpenters, plumbers, and masons during roof system integration.

Comply with safety rules including PPE usage and fall protection systems.

Track material usage and report shortages, damage, or waste.

Assist with training junior roofers or helpers when required.

Perform other construction or repair tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certifications:

KCSE certificate minimum.

Trade certification in roofing, carpentry, or construction from a recognized institution preferred.

Fall Protection and Working at Heights certification is mandatory.

First Aid, Fire Safety, and OSHA/NCA site safety certification an added advantage.

Experience:

2+ years of experience in general roofing construction (residential or commercial).

Hands-on experience with various roofing materials including tile, iron sheets, PVC membrane, shingles, and felt.

Proven ability to install both pitched and flat roofing systems.

Skills:

Strong understanding of roofing layout, alignment, and drainage.

Proficient with hand tools and power tools used in roofing work.

Capable of reading and interpreting construction drawings and roofing diagrams.

Good sense of balance and physical agility.

Attention to detail in sealing, overlapping, and finishing.

Ability to work independently or as part of a team under tight deadlines.

Other Requirements:

Must be physically fit, able to lift up to 25kg, and work long hours standing or kneeling.

Comfortable working at heights and exposed weather conditions.

Willing to travel to project sites and work extended shifts or weekends when needed.

Must comply with all safety and health protocols.
