About the job Optical Engineer

  • Development of complex optical components designated for exterior automotive lighting (headlamps, rearlamps, integrated optics in bumpers,) in pre-order and order-related development as well as pre-development projects.
  • Developing verified optical concepts, ensuring fulfillment of legal, customer and internal requirements under consideration of available production techniques and tolerances.
  • Documentation and presentation of engineering results.
  • Building know-how in lighting engineering.
  • Contribution to continuous improvement of internal processes, guidelines, tools, International collaboration within the global ZKW Team
  • Optical design and/or simulation using subject-specific simulation, calculation and CAD programs: ZKW internal software (LDS, BEAST), from external suppliers (Speos, Lucid-Shape, Zemax, CATIA, )
  • Documentation of own work within the engineering project (simulation/test results, customer presentations, ) according to ZKW standards.
  • Requesting prototypes for the verification of optical design when required and coordination of the build-up of photometric samples. Verification & validation of lighting performance of headlamp & optical components by performing simulations and evaluating and analyzing photometric measurements according to internal and customer specifications.
  • Trigger measurement and simulation workflows concerning the analysis of lighting components (light laboratory, geometrical measurement, )
  • Supporting or contributing to the development of calculation and simulation programs for the development of light components.
  • Coordination of lighting topics within responsibility up to the finished product in the context of industrialization.
  • Performing concept-work and feasibility studies during RFQ in pre-development and development projects.
  • Alignment and coordination with project teams, customer and supplier on lighting relevant topics.


Requirements profile

  • HTL-, technical college or university degree (technical / scientific field of study such as: mathematics, physics, mechanical engineering, electronics, communications engineering, mechatronics )
  • English B2/C1
  • Very good optical basic knowledge
  • Good mathematical knowledge
  • Good knowledge in physics
  • Optional: Programming knowledge (preferably C / C ++)
