SHEQ Officer

Key Responsibilities

Safety Management

• Conduct daily workplace inspections and identify unsafe conditions and practices.
• Implement and monitor site Health & Safety procedures and safe work practices.
• Conduct and facilitate Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Risk Assessments and Safe Work Procedures.
• Ensure appropriate PPE is available, correctly used and maintained.
• Monitor compliance with site rules, safety procedures and emergency requirements.
• Conduct safety inductions for employees, contractors and visitors.
• Conduct toolbox talks and regular safety awareness campaigns.
• Monitor housekeeping, access routes, work areas and storage facilities.
• Inspect machinery, vehicles, tools and equipment from a SHEQ perspective.
• Monitor fire prevention and fire-fighting arrangements, particularly around charcoal kilns, hot charcoal, wood storage and production areas.
• Ensure emergency response procedures are established, communicated and regularly tested.
• Participate in emergency drills, including fire, injury, vehicle incidents and environmental emergencies.

Charcoal Production Safety

• Monitor hazards associated with charcoal kilns and production processes.
• Ensure appropriate controls are in place for heat, smoke, carbon monoxide, fire and burns.
• Monitor safe procedures for kiln loading, ignition, operation, cooling and unloading.
• Ensure hot charcoal is adequately cooled before handling, packaging or storage.
• Monitor safe handling and storage of charcoal to minimise fire risks.
• Assess risks associated with wood cutting, stacking, loading and manual handling.
• Monitor risks associated with mobile equipment, loaders, tractors, trucks and other machinery.
• Ensure workers are protected against excessive dust, smoke, heat and other occupational exposures.

Occupational health

• Identify occupational health hazards and recommend appropriate controls.
• Monitor exposure to dust, smoke, heat, noise and other workplace hazards.
• Coordinate occupational health assessments where required.
• Promote workplace hygiene and good housekeeping.
• Monitor availability and condition of first-aid facilities.
• Maintain records of occupational injuries, illnesses and health-related incidents.
• Promote employee wellness and health awareness.

• Monitor rehabilitation and restoration of areas affected by production activities where applicable.
• Promote responsible use of firewood and sustainable forestry practices.
• Maintain environmental records and assist with environmental reporting.

Incident Management

• Ensure all incidents, near misses, unsafe acts and environmental incidents are reported.
• Conduct or assist with incident investigations.
• Identify root causes and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
• Maintain an incident and near-miss register.
• Track corrective actions until close-out.
• Prepare incident reports and communicate lessons learned to employees.

Required Qualifications

Minimum:

• Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate.
• Relevant SHEQ, Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental qualification.
• Recognised Health & Safety training.
• First Aid certification.
• Firefighting / Fire Marshal training.

Advantageous:

• Diploma or certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, SHEQ or a related field.
• ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and/or ISO 9001 training.
• Incident Investigation training.
• Risk Assessment / HIRA training.
• Environmental management training.
• Driver's licence.

Experience

• 2–5 years' experience in a SHEQ, Health & Safety or Environmental role.
• Experience in manufacturing, forestry, agriculture, mining, charcoal production or another high-risk industrial environment will be advantageous.
• Practical experience conducting inspections, risk assessments, toolbox talks and incident investigations.
• Experience working with contractors and operational teams.
• Experience with fire prevention and emergency response is highly desirable.

• Good understanding of environmental management.
• Risk identification and risk assessment skills.
