About the job Logger Operator
Key Responsibilities
- Operate logging and forestry machinery safely and efficiently.
- Carry out assigned logging operations according to production requirements and site plans.
- Fell, process, delimb, cut, sort, stack, or handle timber as required by the specific machine and operation.
- Conduct daily pre-start inspections of the machine before commencing work.
- Check oil, coolant, hydraulic systems, fuel levels, tracks/tyres, cutting equipment, safety devices, and other relevant components.
- Report mechanical faults, damage, leaks, abnormal noises, or other defects immediately.
- Operate machinery within the manufacturer's recommended limits and safe operating procedures.
- Maintain awareness of surrounding workers, machinery, vehicles, trees, terrain, power lines, and other hazards.
- Maintain safe working distances from other equipment and personnel.
- Follow approved felling and harvesting procedures and site-specific instructions.
- Ensure timber is processed and handled according to required specifications.
- Sort and stack timber correctly where required.
- Minimise damage to standing trees, soil, roads, drainage systems, and surrounding vegetation.
- Operate machinery in a manner that minimises unnecessary fuel consumption, machine wear, and environmental impact.
- Carry out routine operator maintenance, including cleaning, greasing, lubrication, and basic checks as required.
- Keep the machine clean and in good operating condition.
- Complete daily machine inspection sheets, production records, and other required documentation.
- Report production issues, safety concerns, incidents, near misses, and environmental damage to the supervisor immediately.
- Assist with machine servicing and maintenance when required.
- Follow all company policies, forestry procedures, health and safety requirements, and environmental standards.
- Use all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Perform other reasonable duties as instructed by management.
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum Requirements:
- Relevant experience operating forestry or logging machinery.
- Proven ability to operate heavy machinery safely and efficiently.
- Relevant operator competency certification or training, where required.
- Basic understanding of mechanical equipment and routine machine inspections.
- Ability to read and understand safety instructions and operating procedures.
- Valid driver's licence, where required for the position.
Advantageous Experience:
- Experience in commercial forestry or timber harvesting.
- Experience operating harvesters, forwarders, skidders, loaders, feller bunchers, or other forestry machinery.
- Experience working in difficult terrain and remote forestry sites.
- Knowledge of timber species and basic timber handling requirements.
- Experience working with GPS, machine monitoring systems, or forestry production systems.
