Job Title: Head of AI
Location: Boston or San Francisco (Hybrid, ~3 days/week in office; relocation support available)
Employment Type: Full-time
Compensation: $400K base + 3–5% Equity

Job Description:
We are seeking a Head of AI to lead and scale a cutting-edge AI research function focused on scientific discovery. This is a hands-on leadership role (~60% technical, 40% leadership) where you will define the AI strategy, build advanced models, and lead a high-performing team at the intersection of AI and complex simulation environments.

You will work on frontier applications including foundation models, reinforcement learning systems, and agent-based architectures designed to reason, simulate, and generate new scientific insights.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and execute the AI research roadmap (foundation models, RL, agentic systems)
  • Architect and develop advanced AI systems and training methodologies
  • Build scalable training infrastructure and evaluation frameworks
  • Recruit, mentor, and lead a world-class AI research and engineering team
  • Establish best practices for experimentation, collaboration, and code quality
  • Guide technical decision-making and long-term AI strategy
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to align on goals and delivery
  • Represent AI initiatives to select external stakeholders when needed

Requirements:

  • Experience at leading AI research organizations or labs, with ownership of major AI/ML projects
  • Deep expertise in modern machine learning (foundation models, RL, large-scale training)
  • Strong experience with distributed systems and multi-GPU training environments
  • Proven track record of building and leading high-performing teams
  • Ability to translate ambitious research goals into executable roadmaps
  • Strong foundation in physics, mathematics, or related scientific domains
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in scientific machine learning or simulation-based modeling
  • Work integrating AI models with complex simulation environments
  • Familiarity with AI safety, governance, or regulatory considerations
