About the job News Clerk

In this role you will write news briefs, help with page production, and perform other clerical functions to keep the newsroom functioning smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Type briefs for zones, business, features and school sections
  • Answer newsroom telephones
  • Read the website and newspaper daily and stay up to date on news in Charleston vicinity and the world.
  • Produce work that is accurate in fact, tone and implication.
  • Write, edit and compile information for our community calendars.
  • Design pages that are clean, attractive and helpful to the reader, following layout standards.
  • Use photos or other design devices to engage readers.
  • Meet all page flow deadlines efficiently. Meet internal page processing deadlines to ensure adequate time to edit thoroughly.
  • Prioritize delivery of relevant content for immediate dissemination on our digital platforms, when appropriate and under the guidance of supervisors.
  • Seek out training opportunities to improve skills. Work with supervising editor to improve skills.
  • React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Perform errands as needed by the editor
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements, minimum education level, and experience:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills associated with developing trusting relationships and maintaining a high level of confidentiality
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with excellent follow-through
  • Bachelor's degree or appropriate professional experience

  • Must be able to work flexible hours

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent command of grammar/spelling and a meticulous approach to writing
    Effectively use computer technology
    Able to complete multiple tasks accurately within deadlines
    Handle jobs as they arise in the newsroom that may be outside the scope of daily duties
    Excellent keyboard skills
