  • Estimate Compensation: $120.20 to $123.55/hr. (negotiable)
  • Relationship: 1099 Independent Contractor.

Working Hours:

The Physician Medical Director shall devote a minimum of 32 hours per month performing the services required.

Qualifications:

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
  • Board certification in a relevant medical specialty.
  • Valid medical license to practice in the state of Arizona.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders and manage multiple responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Physician Medical Director shall act as an advisor for the delivery of emergency medical services including advanced life support and basic life support.
  • The physician shall regularly review these programs and recommend changes or improvements.
  • The Physician Medical Director shall actively participate in the development and review of medical protocols, programs and directives and make appropriate recommendations regarding changes and implementations to the EMS Division Chief and Fire Chief.
  • The Physician Medical Director shall have access to field involvement with paramedics, AEMTs and EMTs and shall provide evaluation and feedback to the fire chief in the following areas:
  • Case critique based upon ride along, QA/CQI program and chart review.

       -- Assist the chief on an as-needed basis in helping to resolve conflicts involving EMS personnel issues and EMS delivery policies

       -- The Physician Medical Director shall actively participate in the development and review of UFA ambulance and EMS 
           operations and make appropriate recommendations regarding changes and implementations to the EMS Division Chief and
           Fire Chief.

EMS Training, Testing & Evaluations

  • Identify needs and participate in the development and delivery of continuing medical education for paramedics, AEMTs, and EMTs. Such training should help personnel maintain or obtain EMT, AEMT, and paramedic certifications and aid in their professional development.
  • Participate in the design, development, and implementation of a comprehensive Quality Assurance and Continuous Quality Improvement (QA/CQI) program. The program shall be designed to measure and improve all aspects of EMS delivery.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and review of clinical pilot projects, demonstration projects, and studies.
  • Provide consultation as requested by UFA on the development, coordination, and evaluation of a system-wide Quality Assurance program, including patient care, handling audits, EMS personnel performance evaluations, chart reviews, and other identified elements of Quality Assurance.
  • Advise UFA on public programs relating to EMS.

Regular Continuous Quality Improvement (QA/CQI)

  1. Conduct regular electronic health record reviews and engage in continuous quality improvement.
  2. Regularly review new provider training, education, and performance.
  3. Coordinate with EMS Division Staff to ensure EMS care and protocols are evidence-based and reflect accepted industry best practices.

Regular Protocol Review

  1. Regularly review existing protocols with representatives from each level of medical provider to ensure protocols:
    • Meet the most up-to-date and best practice guidelines.
    • Are clear, free of contradictions, and appropriate to the providers scope of practice.

Professional Development

  1. The Physician Medical Director is expected to attend local and national seminars, professional meetings, and medical education courses to meet CME requirements as required by the physicians specialty and subspecialty boards.

EMS Research

  1. Encourage involvement in and development of local and national research in Emergency Medical Services. The provider may designate research assistants, supervised by the Physician Medical Director, who will be given direct access to UFAs electronic patient care records for the purpose of clinical research and data analysis, including interpretation and de-identification of records. Researchers will work within UFAs electronic storage medium and will only export data pursuant to research protocols established for each project. Research assistants will be subject to UFA approval, trained on HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, and adhere to UFAs HIPAA policies and processes. The provider will not use this access to transfer any datawhether de-identified or notfrom UFA to itself or any other entity without express authorization from UFA via a separate HIPAA-compliant Data Sharing or Business Associate Agreement. Work done by designated research assistants under this subparagraph will be at no cost to UFA.

EMS Education

  1. Provide monthly Physician Medical Director updates and case reviews.
  2. Participate in hands-on training and education, including established airway and cardiac academies and other regular course offerings identified by the EMS Division Chief.
  3. Deliver training and education for specialty medical response programs (e.g., Hazmat, Wilderness/Austere, USAR/Heavy Rescue, Wildland, etc.).

Designate

  1. The Physician Medical Director shall appoint a designee or team to stay informed of all Medical Direction activities and be available for consultation if the Medical Director is unavailable. UFA and the Physician Medical Director may jointly designate additional Associate Medical Directors to support UFAs mission and responsibilities outlined in this agreement. These appointments may include individuals with expertise in specific operational or clinical domains such as tactical medicine, hazardous materials and toxicology, pediatrics, and other subspecialty or mission-aligned areas as mutually agreed upon. Associate Medical Directors shall serve under the direction of the Medical Director and in coordination with UFA leadership.

Controlled Substance Program

  1. The Physician Medical Director will be named on Federal and State controlled substance registrations.
  2. The Physician Medical Director will provide guidance, review, and advice on UFAs controlled substance program.

EMS Response

  1. The Physician Medical Director or designated Associate Medical Director(s) may provide physician-level care within UFAs response area as determined by the Fire Chief and as permitted under State of Utah licensing standards. Regardless of licensing body, physician medical response within UFAs response area will be guided by UFA Policies and Procedures. Physicians will provide medical care in the prehospital setting according to State of Utah licensing standards and with available equipment and resources.
