- Type of Employment: Part-Time = 5 days a month.
- Salary: $68.00 - $70 per hour
- Travel: Travel may be required under this contract.
- Relationship: 1099 Independent Contractor.
Working Hours
The Optometrist must be available to provide up to five (5) eight-hour clinical visits (40 sessions) per month for an estimated total of 480 sessions per contract year.
- One (1) session is defined as one (1) hour in length. There will be an estimated 12 to 15 patients per clinic. Clinics will typically be scheduled between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. (lunch is not included), Monday through Friday, excluding Federal Holidays.
- The monthly schedule will be agreed upon by mutual agreement of all parties. This schedule is subject to change to accommodate the institution's needs. Any change in schedule or adjustments in sessions will require prior approval by the Contracting Officers Representative (COR)
Mandatory Qualifications
- Graduated from an accredited Optometry Program in the United States.
- Have a current professional license that permits him/her to practice the professional specialty of Optometry in the State of Texas.
- Must possess one (1) year of experience in Optometry.
- Must have the ability to work with an inmate population from a variety of cultural, regional, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Must possess and provide documentation for continuing education.
- Be able to read, write, and speak English well enough and enunciate with sufficient clarity to communicate with patients and other healthcare providers effectively.
- Be able to operate a personal computer utilizing Microsoft applications, such as Word and Excel, and efficiently use the Bureau of Prisons' Electronic Medical Record.
- Must have a current BLS certification.
- Must apply for and have approved appropriate medical privileges by the medical staff.
Attire
Additionally, contractors are required to wear appropriate professional attire at all times. Jeans (of any color), T-shirts, sandals (of any type), tank tops, and sweatpants/shirts are not considered appropriate professional attire.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Evaluate patients as referred by the medical staff.
- Conduct detailed assessments of the eyes, including testing peripheral vision, eye muscle function, and the retina, cornea, and optic nerve condition. This involves using advanced diagnostic tools, such as slit lamps and visual field analyzers. Write eye prescriptions based on the eye exam.
- Providing legible written reports on all patients evaluated, to include, but not limited to:
- Eye exams as requested.
- Diagnosis of eye conditions.
- Removal of foreign objects from the eye.
- Physical findings.
- Tonometry exams.
- Routine refractions.
- Recommendations for treatment and follow-up care.
- Provide referral services for eye pathologies.
- Prescribing corrective lenses/frames as appropriate.
- Fitting of eyeglasses and adjustment of frames.
- Individualized adjustment of exam equipment, as needed.
- Utilize the Bureau of Prisons Electronic Medical Record to document the eye exam.
