- Type of Employment: Full-Time, 40 hours per week.
- Estimate Pay: $19.08 to $24.01/hour.
- Paid Time Off per Year: 80-hours per year, accruing from day of Hire.
- Sick Leave per Year: 56-hours per year, accruing from day of Hire.
- Paid Federal Holidays: Eleven (11) Paid Federal Holidays.
Working Hours
The Phlebotomist work schedule is Monday through Friday, excluding Federal Holidays with working hours between 0600 and 1800, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break, not exceed 40 hours per week. Overtime is not authorized.
Summary of Duties
The Phlebotomist will provide Services for the prison population at the Federal Correctional Complex-Hazelton, Secure Female Facility. Services includes providing but not limited to collection of blood and urine samples, preparation and tracking of all laboratory samples, biological specimen preparation and packaging for shipment and maintaining laboratory logs and other records as necessary to comply with Clinical Laboratory Inspection Amendment (CLIA) guidelines.
Qualifications
- Have valid certification/licensure to practice in the state of West Virginia as a Medical Assistant, Laboratory Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Phlebotomist.
- The individual must possess proof of their current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration.
- Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
Preferred qualifications and experience include:
- Experience in providing healthcare in a correctional setting
- Additional professional education and certifications
Attire
The contract employee is expected to wear professional clothing that is appropriate to the correctional environment while on duty; business attire or scrub-type uniforms are approved. No articles of clothing worn by the contract employee will be of a khaki tan, khaki green, tan, dark green, gray, orange, or camouflage color or pattern. Footwear will be closed-toe, flat-bottom, and completely cover the feet; fluid resistance and non-slip soles are preferred. Protective vests will be supplied by the institution.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Organizing, scheduling, performing, and processing laboratory studies and specimen collection within the Health Service Unit, to include A&O in-processing, DNA collection per procedure, vaccine programs, and PPD updates.
- Preparing and ensuring that specimens are packed and transported according to the contract or BOP Reference Lab guidelines and procedures.
- Ensuring that lab requests are completed properly, and all reports are returned from the contract lab and scanned into the Bureau Electronic Medical Record (BEMR).
- Ensuring that providers are notified of lab results appropriately.
- Assisting the physician, mid-level provider, nurse, or other staff with patient flow in a clinic setting by measuring the patients vital signs and weight and scanning laboratory results into BEMR.
- Accomplishing all procedures within standard infection control protocols.
- Assisting in patient dismissal from the clinic upon completion of treatment as well as ensuring follow up care instructions are understood.
- Maintaining laboratory equipment through normal procedures including cleaning and sterilizing as well as minor troubleshooting or repairs. Any defective equipment should be properly reported for corrective action to be taken.
- Properly storing and maintaining adequate levels of supplies in assigned rooms. If, at any time, the incumbent notices any supplies running low in the supply room, he/she immediately notifies the person responsible so that supplies can be reordered.
- Ensuring instruments and unapproved items are not left in the clinic during non-patient care hours and that proper storage and security procedures are adhered to, as instructed.
- Assisting in audits and reviews of records.
- Assisting in the coordination of BOP and Contract Reference Lab contact, CLIA re-certification, and assisting the HSA and Clinical Director in writing and implementing policies that deal with the laboratory program.
- Completing a wide array of clerical and support duties including utilization of institutional-specific computer programs such as SENTRY.
- Acquiring and maintaining knowledge of the Health Services Manual and unit procedures necessary to accomplish the mission described herein, ensuring that the Laboratory Procedure Manual is updated accordingly.
