  • Type of Employment: Full-Time, 40 hours per week.
  • Period of Performance: Base Year plus four (4) Option Years
  • Estimate Pay: $17.58 - $22.67/hour.
  • Paid Time Off per Year: Up to 80 hours per year, occurring on day one.
  • Sick Leave per Year: Up to 56 hours per year, occurring on day one.
  • Paid Federal Holidays: Eleven (11) Paid Federal Holidays

Schedule:

One (1) session equals one (1) hour of service. A normal workday will consist of eight (8) sessions, for an estimate of 32 sessions per week and 1,664 sessions per twelve-month period. Sessions shall be scheduled between the hours of 7:00 A.M to 3:30 P.M., Monday through Thursday (except Federal holidays), with a 30-minute unpaid lunch period. The Certified Phlebotomy Technicians schedule shall not exceed 40 hours per week. The actual hours of work will be determined by the Health Services Administrator and may be adjusted to meet the needs of the institution.

Education and Experience

  • Have a valid certification to practice in the state of Kentucky as a Medical Assistant, Laboratory Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or Phlebotomist. 
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified, in accordance with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Must provide proof of experience with specimen collection, packaging, and shipment to referral laboratories
  • Knowledge of maintaining appropriate records and evidence of experience working in a correctional setting, perferred.
  • Three (3) letters of reference.

Description of Duties

  • Assist the Physician, Physician Assistant, and/or Nurse with patient flow in a clinic setting by measuring the patients' vital signs and weight and scanning laboratory results in the Bureau Electronic Medical Record (BEMR).
  • Organize, schedule, and perform laboratory studies, specimen collection and process within the Health Service Unit, to include A&O in-processing, DNA per procedure, vaccine programs and PPD updates.
  • Prepare and ensure specimens are packed and transported according to the contract or BOP Reference Lab and document per Health Services Unit Laboratory Procedures. Ensure that lab requests are completed properly and all reports are returned from the contract lab, provider notified, log results in as received, follow up appropriately, and file results in lab and medical record.
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of the Health Services Manual and Unit Procedures necessary to accomplish the mission described herein, ensuring that the Laboratory Procedure Manual is updated accordingly.
  • Assist the Health Service Administrator (HSA) or his/her designee in the coordination of BOP and Contract Reference Lab contact, CLIA re-certification, maintenance of equipment and notification of needed supplies.
  • Assist the HSA and Clinical Director with writing and implementing policies that deal with the laboratory program.
