Job Overview

London Borough of Lambeth is seeking a Tenancy Rights Adviser to join a new Renters' Rights Act Tenancy Rights, Advice and Enforcement Team.

This role will support the council's new duties under the Renters' Rights Act, helping private renters understand and exercise their rights, preventing homelessness, resolving tenancy disputes and supporting enforcement action where required.

The successful candidate will provide specialist tenancy advice, early intervention and casework support to residents, particularly those at risk of unlawful eviction, harassment, poor landlord practice or homelessness.

This is a frontline housing advice role suited to someone with strong tenancy law knowledge, casework experience and the ability to work with residents in a trauma-informed, empathetic and legally accurate way.

This role requires strong tenancy law and housing advice experience, ideally within a local authority, housing needs, private rented sector, homelessness prevention or tenancy enforcement setting.

You must understand tenancy rights, the Renters' Rights Act and related housing legislation, and be able to manage frontline casework, make lawful and defensible decisions and maintain accurate records.

Candidates without relevant tenancy advice, housing legislation or frontline housing casework experience are unlikely to be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist tenancy rights advice to residents
  • Support tenants to understand and exercise their legal rights
  • Deliver early intervention to prevent homelessness
  • Manage frontline tenancy rights casework
  • Investigate potential breaches and offences relating to tenancy rights
  • Support residents affected by unlawful eviction, harassment or poor landlord practice
  • Resolve tenancy disputes where possible through advice and intervention
  • Make sound, lawful and defensible casework decisions
  • Maintain accurate case records and evidence
  • Work in a prevention-first and resident-centred way
  • Apply trauma-informed practice when supporting residents
  • Liaise with Housing, Legal Services and enforcement colleagues
  • Work with partner agencies including Adult Social Care, Children's Social Care, Health, Community Safety and voluntary sector partners
  • Contribute to a coordinated response to tenancy issues and wider vulnerabilities
  • Support the development of a high-quality tenancy rights, advice and enforcement service

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Knowledge of tenancy law
  • Knowledge of the Renters' Rights Act and related housing legislation
  • Experience managing casework in a frontline advice, support or enforcement setting
  • Experience supporting tenants or residents with housing issues
  • Ability to identify tenancy risks, unlawful eviction concerns or poor landlord practice
  • Ability to make sound, lawful and defensible decisions
  • Strong written case recording skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work with residents in a trauma-informed and empathetic way
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal services and external partners
  • Good understanding of homelessness prevention and housing need
  • Ability to manage sensitive cases involving vulnerable residents

Additional Information

This role requires a Standard DBS, not a Basic DBS.
