Executive Overview

The Director of Benefits is a senior leadership mandate responsible for the strategic design, fiscal oversight, and operational execution of a comprehensive total rewards portfolio within a premier healthcare organization. This role requires a sophisticated technical background in health and welfare plan architecture, retirement fund governance, and regulatory adherence. The incumbent will align benefits initiatives with organizational financial objectives, leading a high-performing team and managing complex vendor ecosystems to optimize program ROI and enhance employee value propositions.

Core Technical Responsibilities

  • Strategic Program Design: Lead the end-to-end lifecycle of benefit programs, including health, welfare, and retirement plans, ensuring alignment with corporate total rewards strategies.
  • Regulatory & Risk Management: Maintain rigorous compliance with all federal and state mandates, including but not limited to ERISA, IRS codes, COBRA, HIPAA, and FMLA.
  • Vendor & Fiduciary Oversight: Manage multi-party relationships with actuaries, brokers, legal consultants, and third-party administrators (TPAs) to ensure service-level agreement (SLA) compliance and competitive pricing.
  • Financial Analysis & Metrics: Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess program efficacy, utilization rates, and financial return on investment (ROI).
  • Systems Integration: Partner with HRIS and IT departments to drive digital transformation, enhancing system automation, data integrity, and the technical delivery of benefits.
  • Escalation & Governance: Serve as the final authority for complex benefits adjudication, process improvements, and high-level internal communications.

Candidate Requirements

Professional Qualifications

  • Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in benefits management, with a proven track record in strategic plan design and implementation.
  • Sector Expertise: Direct experience within a healthcare environment is mandatory.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep proficiency in retirement plan administration—including 401(k), 403(b), and pension schemes—and sophisticated health and welfare structures.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated experience in executive-level leadership, managing departmental budgets and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related quantitative field.

Preferred Credentials

  • Master's degree in a related discipline.
  • Industry-recognized certifications: Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) or Certified Benefits Professional (CBP).
  • Proven experience in wellness program development and exposure to value-based or alternative healthcare benefit models.
