The purpose of this position:

The Superintendent Slag Contrator are responsible in managing the safe production slag concentrator process at PT Freeport Indonesias Manyar Smelter. The Slag Concentrator area consists of: Concentrate Offloading, Belt and Pneumatic Conveying, Concentrate Storage and Blending, and the Slag Concentrator. safe and efficient handling of materials and the processing of slag to recover valuable metals.

The key duties and responsibilities of this position are:

Safety

  1. Drive the implementation of Fatal Risk Management (FRM) system and tools in managing fatal risks associated within the area of responsibility.
  2. Establish and nurture a disciplined and proactive risk-based approach within the area of responsibility.
  3. Ensure team members possess the appropriate safety knowledge through managing training, conducting benchmarks, and through coaching/mentoring.

Strategic

  1. Ensure strategic goals, objectives, and establishing key performance indicators for the Materials Handling operations and maintenance team are consistent with overall organizational goals.
  2. Contributes to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for designated areas, including coordination of major outages.
  3. Proactively seeking opportunities of cost savings through various analytical techniques and accurate budgeting processes. Leads the establishment and sustainable use of cost monitoring dashboards for the operational processes, actively participating in cost review discussions.
  4. Collaborate with the Learning and Development team to ensure knowledge management systems are appropriate for the business needs and personal development needs within the team.
  5. Collaborate with the Technical Services team to establish operational guidelines to ensure optimum recoveries in the slag concentrators as it supports the overall recovery of the plant.

Operational

  1. Supervises, enhances, and monitors safe operational and maintenance practices for the area.
  2. Lead a team by providing direction to the operational team. Ensures direct reports and departmental teams have clear and specific goals to support the downstream operation, specifically good blending and steady rate of concentrate for the smelting furnace. Ensures appropriate knowledge and training programs for direct reports.
  3. Ensures team is proactive in coordination with the Planning and Technical Services teams in ensuring optimum daily operations of the facilities with both a short and long-term outlook.
  4. Support the drive of work culture consistent with company values through encouragement of positive behaviors and correcting deficiencies, to implement disciplinary actions as appropriate.
  5. Manage contractors within the area of operations to ensure safe and high-quality work, in line with the long-term strategic goals of the organization.

During the detailed engineering, construction, operational readiness, and commissioning phase of the project:

  1. Familiar with the concepts and detailed engineering of the new smelter, refinery, and precious metal processing facilities.
  2. Assist and support the project team in ensuring implementation of safety systems consistent to PTFIs and FCXs standards importantly the Fatal Risk Management (FRM/eFRM) system.
  3. Conduct frequent work observations and site inspections together with the project team. Assist the project team in conducting risk assessments and control implementations on new hazards that may emerge during the project.
  4. Lead/support in the design of the organization of the Material Handling & Slag Concentrator Department.
  5. Identify to the function of the department with other stakeholders in the Smelter team; build and grow an effective Operations team; ensure team members have clarity on their roles including expectations across the different role levels.
  6. Support the team with the necessary training to enable them to provide services expected of them; coach and mentor team members to improve their effectiveness.
  7. Identify the development and completion of operational-related readiness activities throughout the preparational period to ensure the operational teams are adequately prepared and resourced for commissioning and ramp-up activities.
  8. Support the Maintenance Department in the development of spares identification efforts and spare parts recommendations for the Smelter facilities
  9. To be fully familiar with all legal requirements related to safety, health, and environment relevant to the operations.
  10. Incorporate the safety, health, and environmental HAZOP and Risk Assessments in designing the organization for the area Operations team.
  11. Support in creating a resource readiness plan for the commissioning and operations of the new smelter.


The key challenges in this position:

  • Planning, People Development, Team Building, and Management of contractors.
  • Manage the effective flow of raw materials, ores, and by-products within the facility to minimize bottlenecks and maintain a smooth production process.
  • Identify effective concentration of valuable metals and minerals from slag, a by-product of smelting, while minimizing waste and environmental impact.
  • Adhere to safety regulations and environmental compliance standards in a high-risk industrial setting.
  • Implement robust emergency response plans for equipment failures, safety incidents, or environmental emergencies.


The background, education, and work experience needed to succeed in this job are:

Education, Certifications, and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline, metalurgy or related field and more than ten (10) years of experience in mineral/metal processing technical and/or operations, including extensive experience in operational management roles.
  • A master's degree in an Engineering discipline or related field is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Pengawas Operasional Madya (POM) Certification.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Skilled in supervising, evaluating, training, and motivating employees.
  • Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of mineral/metal processing, particularly bulk material handling and milling. Knowledge on several typical equipment such as belt conveying, pneumatic conveying, reclaimers, SAG mill, Ball mill, flotation machines, thickeners, and filter press.
  • Able to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions.
  • Skilled in managing complex operations or engineering projects.
  • Familiarity and experience in managing operations in compliance with relevant Indonesian regulations on safety, health, and environmental.
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office suites, SAP, EMS, and other business systems.
  • Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

The key areas that the incumbent has decision-making responsibility :

  • Operational planning: Develop, execute, and adjust operational plans for the material handling and slag concentrator section, such as production schedules, resource allocation, and maintenance tasks.
  • Slag concentration: make decision about the slag concentrator processes to efficiently recover valuable metals and minerals from slag.
  • Resource allocation: determine the allocation of human resources, equipment, and materials to meet production targets and address shifting priorities within the section.
  • Safety compliance: Ensure that all material handling and slag concentrator activities adhere to safety regulations and environmental compliance standards. Make decisions related to safety protocols and environmental practices.
  • Emergency response: Create, develop and implement emergency response plans for the Slag Concentrator and Material Handling section, as well as make critical decisions in the event of equipment breakdowns, safety issues, or environmental disasters.
  • Budget management: Manage the budget for the Slag Concentrator section to optimize resources, including capital expenditures, operational costs, and maintenance expenses.
  • Project implementation: Evaluate and decide on the implementation of projects involving equipment upgrades, process enhancements, and facility expansions in the material handling and slag concentrator division.
  • Technology adoption: Evaluate and make a decision the adoption of new technologies or practices that can enhance the Material Handling and Slag Concentrator section's performance.
  • Resource Procurement: Make decisions regarding the procurement of raw materials and chemicals required for the Material Handling and Slag Concentrator process.
  • Technology adoption: Evaluate and make a decision the adoption of new technologies or practices that can enhance the Material Handling and Slag Concentrator section's performance.
  • Environmental impact: Evaluate and decide on practices and technologies that minimize the environmental impact of Material Handling and Slag Concentrator processes, including emissions and waste management.
