Job Summary

A Security Dog Handler (K9 Handler) is responsible for utilizing a patrol dog to detect, deter, and respond to security threats. Their primary purpose is to protect personnel, premises, and assets by conducting patrols, managing access control, and using the dog's senses to detect intruders or contraband .

Key Responsibilities

Patrol and Inspection: Conduct regular foot patrols of premises with a K9 partner to detect unauthorized presence, suspicious activities, or security breaches .

Access Control: Monitor property entrances, authorize the entrance of people and vehicles, and prevent unauthorized access .

Incident Response: Utilize the K9 patrol dog in the prevention, investigation, and combating of crime. Respond to alarms and suspicious behavior immediately .

Reporting: Write detailed reports documenting daily activities, incidents, suspicious behavior, and any occurrences during the shift .

K9 Care: Responsible for the health, grooming, feeding, and general welfare of the assigned patrol dog.

Perimeter Security: Secure all exits, doors, and windows; ensure the property is physically secure .

Required Qualifications & Certifications

PSIRA Certification: A valid PSIRA certificate (required, supervisors require Grade A or B).

Dog Handler Certificate: A specific K9 Handler or Dog Handler certificate is mandatory .

Firearm Competency: Valid Firearm Business Purpose certificate and Firearm Competency (including refresher training per regulations).

Education: A high school qualification (Grade 12/Matric) or equivalent .

Drivers License: A valid Drivers License with a Professional Driving Permit (PDP) is often required, especially for mobile patrols .

Clearance: A clear criminal record is essential .

Competencies & Skills

Physical Fitness: Must be physically fit and strong to handle a patrol dog and respond to emergencies .

Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for report writing and radio contact .

Attention to Detail: Keen observation skills to detect hazards and suspicious behavior .

Teamwork: Ability to work within a security team and liaise with law enforcement .
