Enterprise & Business Development Officer- Uganda

Employment Type: Full-time

Location: Kampala, Uganda

Compensation: UGX 2,300,000 Per Month

Purpose of the Role 

The Enterprise & Business Development officer will support the growth and sustainability enterprises by strengthening their integration into high-potential value chains. This role will play a pivotal part in building our client's Uganda portfolio through strategic business development, ecosystem engagement, enterprise support, and internal capacity building. The position will also serve to provide support on talent acquisition, staff development, and performance management. 

Key Responsibilities 

1. Business Development & Portfolio Growth 

Identify and pursue new programmatic and partnership opportunities aligned with our client's mission in Uganda. 

Support proposal development, concept note drafting, and donor engagement. 

Build a pipeline of high-impact projects to grow our client's local footprint in inclusive enterprise development. 

Lead market scoping and opportunity assessments for portfolio diversification. 

Cultivate relationships with local donors, government stakeholders, private sector actors, and BDS networks. 

2. Enterprise Development Support 

Conduct value chain and ecosystem diagnostics to identify barriers and market opportunities. 

Provide tailored technical assistance to MSMEs, focusing on business formalization, operational efficiency, and investment readiness. 

Facilitate access to market intelligence, e-commerce platforms, and digital tools for enterprise expansion. 

Connect entrepreneurs to financing opportunities, including credit, input financing, and insurance. 

3. Capacity Building & Mentorship 

Design and implement training programs on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and digital skills. 

Mentor YWMEs and MSMEs on financial and non-financial aspects of business, good agricultural techniques, and business resilience. 

Build capacity of local trainers and staff through coaching, toolkits, and performance monitoring. 

Evaluate training effectiveness using pre/post-tests, feedback loops, and impact assessments. 

4. Value Chain & Market Linkages 

Support SMEs and cooperatives in improving business models and operational scalability. 

Strengthen aggregation, group marketing, and joint ventures to increase market competitiveness. 

Collaborate with off-takers and buyers to create inclusive procurement channels. 

Promote value addition, product traceability, and supply chain transparency. 

5. Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting 

Maintain detailed records of enterprise support activities, trainings, and stakeholder engagements. 

Lead data collection, analysis, and reporting on program outcomes and impact indicators. 

Contribute to donor reports, case studies, and learning products. 

Monitor progress against KPIs and adapt implementation based on evidence and feedback. 

6. Compliance, Safeguarding, and Gender Integration 

Ensure all program activities comply with donor, legal, and ethical standards. 

Champion women's leadership in business and entrepreneurial decision-making. 

Uphold safeguarding principles and report any breaches in a timely and transparent manner. 

Promote environmental sustainability and social accountability across interventions. 


Qualifications and Experience Essential: 

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Agribusiness, Development Studies, Economics, or related field. 

At least 5 years of experience in enterprise development, MSME support, or market systems development. 

Proven ability to design and deliver business development services and training. 

Experience in portfolio development, partnership management, or donor engagement. 

Strong knowledge of Uganda's MSME ecosystem and inclusive value chains.

Excellent facilitation, coaching, and mentorship skills. 

Demonstrated experience in HR functions such as recruitment, onboarding, and performance management. 


Desirable: 

Master's degree or certification in Business Development, Economics 

Prior experience working with youth- and women-led enterprises.

Familiarity with digital tools for enterprise support and training delivery.

Experience with donor-funded programs (e.g., DFIs, bilateral agencies, foundations). 

Fluency in local languages is an added advantage.
