Automation Engineer / Automation Technician
Location: Adrian, MI (Tier I Automotive Supplier Plastics Manufacturing)
Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Automation Engineer (or experienced Automation Technician) to support, develop, and optimize advanced automation systems across our high-volume plastics manufacturing and assembly operations. In this role, you'll work with cutting-edge Siemens PLC platforms, Cognex vision systems, and Keyence sensors and inspection tools to enhance equipment performance, ensure quality, and drive continuous improvement in production efficiency and reliability.
You'll be part of a collaborative engineering team responsible for automation design, programming, troubleshooting, and integration helping us deliver precision and consistency to our automotive customers.
Key Responsibilities
Automation Systems & Controls

Program, troubleshoot, and maintain Siemens PLCs, HMIs, and automation networks.

Configure and optimize Cognex and Keyence vision systems, sensors, and error-proofing devices (Poka-Yoke).

Support the installation, commissioning, and validation of new automated equipment and assembly cells.

Maintain and improve control system documentation, including electrical schematics, PLC code backups, and device configurations.

Perform advanced troubleshooting of automation, robotics, and control systems to minimize downtime.
Process Optimization & Continuous Improvement

Partner with manufacturing and maintenance teams to identify automation improvements that enhance safety, cycle time, and part quality.

Lead or support Lean and Six Sigma initiatives to reduce waste and improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

Participate in PFMEA reviews and implement controls to mitigate process risks.

Support capital projects involving new automation or upgrades to existing systems.
Safety & Compliance

Conduct machine risk assessments and ensure compliance with LOTO and plant safety standards.

Provide training to maintenance and production staff on proper automation operation and safety procedures.

Actively promote a safety-first culture in all equipment design and modifications.
Production Support

Respond to production line automation issues and collaborate with maintenance and engineering teams to ensure quick resolution.

Provide on-shift troubleshooting and system support for PLC, vision, and electrical control issues.

Serve as a technical resource to operators, technicians, and engineers for automation-related challenges.
Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering preferred; equivalent technical diploma or experience considered.

3+ years of hands-on automation experience in automotive or plastics manufacturing.

Proven experience with Siemens PLCs (TIA Portal, S7-1200/1500), Cognex In-Sight/Designer, and Keyence vision and sensor systems.

Strong understanding of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

Working knowledge of machine safety systems, LOTO procedures, and industrial networks (ProfNet, Ethernet/IP, etc.).

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with manufacturing data collection or MES systems.

Ability to lift up to 33 lbs. and perform hands-on work on production floor equipment.
