Location: Belgium – Hybrid (3 days remote possible)

Duration: 2–3 years (long-term assignment)

The Context

We are looking for an experienced professional to take ownership of several critical legacy back-office systems.

The current expert managing these environments will retire in June. These systems contain decades of business logic and operational knowledge that currently reside with one individual. A previous successor was onboarded but has recently left, which makes this hire urgent.

A thorough knowledge transfer will need to be completed before retirement to ensure continuity.

At the same time, these applications are planned to be migrated to a new solution within the next 2–3 years. The selected candidate will therefore play a key role both in:

  • Maintaining and stabilizing the existing systems

  • Supporting business continuity

  • Contributing to the future migration program

Scope of the Role

You will be responsible for maintenance and limited further development of four legacy back-office applications, all approximately 30 years old.

Technical Environment

  • HP Alpha / VAX-VMS environment

  • RMS file system

  • COBOL

  • BASIC

  • 4GL (Gembase)

Applications in Scope

  1. Insurance Contract & Third-Party Management (GI)

    • Automotive, property and liability coverages

    • Written in COBOL

  2. Insurance Claims Management (GI+)

    • Same coverages as above

    • Developed in 4GL (Gembase)

  3. Technical Accounting (Broker Application)

    • Contract renewals

    • Premium invoicing

    • Financial reconciliation (bordereaux & statements)

    • Written in BASIC

  4. Transport & Marine Insurance Management

    • Contract, third-party and claims management

    • Written in BASIC

Your Responsibilities

  • Ensure operational stability of all four applications

  • Perform maintenance and targeted enhancements

  • Execute and document knowledge transfer

  • Support business users and internal stakeholders

  • Contribute to analysis and preparation for system migration

  • Act as technical reference for these legacy environments

Profile

  • Strong experience in legacy environments (VMS, COBOL, BASIC or similar)

  • Comfortable working on end-of-life systems

  • Able to operate independently and handle responsibility

  • Structured and methodical in documentation and knowledge transfer

  • Experience in insurance or financial systems is a strong plus

  • Languages: French, Dutch and English (preferred)
