About the role:
Help turn workers’ experiences into evidence, partnerships and action.
We are seeking a thoughtful, resourceful professional who can connect field realities with research and public advocacy. Based in Ahmedabad, you will work with migrant and informal workers, programme teams, and external partners to strengthen access to rights, social protection, decent housing, and safer working conditions.
The Opportunity
This role offers the opportunity to shape an evidence-informed advocacy agenda grounded in workers’ lives. You will identify recurring problems through field engagement, develop focused research, and translate findings into practical recommendations and sustained dialogue with government, employers, and civil society. The work will include labour rights, occupational safety and health, social security, worker housing, and emerging concerns such as heat stress.
Your Responsibilities
- Research and Evidence: Identify research questions with field teams and workers; undertake focused studies, interviews, and policy reviews; analyse programme and case data; and develop concise research notes, policy briefs, and worker case studies. Use appropriate methods, informed consent, and confidentiality safeguards.
- Advocacy and Policy Engagement: Develop achievable advocacy priorities and action plans from field evidence. Prepare submissions and recommendations, track policy developments, and follow up on institutional commitments and barriers affecting workers.
- Government and Employer Engagement: Build constructive working relationships with labour and social-protection authorities, health services, municipal institutions, and employers. Use these relationships to address gaps in workers’ access to services, safety, and grievance resolution.
- Partnerships and Collective Action: Develop purposeful collaborations with worker groups, trade unions, civil society organisations, researchers, and academic institutions. Convene dialogues and joint initiatives with clear objectives and follow-through.
- Communication and Representation: Communicate findings clearly for different audiences and represent the organization in relevant consultations and networks. Work with communications colleagues to bring worker perspectives into public discussion responsibly.
- Field Connections and Organisational Learning: Maintain regular contact with workers and field teams in Ahmedabad and relevant Gujarat locations. Support colleagues to integrate research and advocacy into programme work, document learning, and report on progress and outcomes.
Who We Are Looking For
- A postgraduate degree in Social Work, Sociology, Development Studies, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
- 3–5 years of relevant experience in advocacy, research, partnerships, or labour-rights work, with evidence of translating field insights into action.
- Strong understanding of migration, informal employment, and development issues; experience in Gujarat or urban worker settings would be valuable.
- Ability to design and undertake focused field research, interpret qualitative and basic quantitative data, and produce clear, well-supported written outputs.
- Experience engaging government institutions and civil society, alongside sound judgement, persistence, and the ability to build trust.
- Strong writing and communication skills in English and Hindi. Working proficiency in Gujarati is desirable.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with programme teams, and willingness to travel regularly as required.
