Salary: 10-24 LPA

About The Role

We build public policy tools that serve policymakers, researchers, and citizens. We need someone who can keep our technical infrastructure running, improve it continuously, and use modern AI-assisted development tools to move fast without breaking things.

This is not a pure engineering role. You'll work closely with economists and policy researchers — you need to understand what the data means, not just how to move it.

What You'll Do

Platform & Web

  • Own and maintain platform- a district-level data platform covering 800+ districts across India
  • Add new features, visualizations, and improvements as the product evolves
  • Maintain and update org website
  • Fix bugs, improve performance, ensure reliability

Data Systems

  • Maintain pipelines that pull and process data from government databases into the platform
  • Handle data loading, transformation, and quality checks
  • Generate maps and GIS visualizations that make district-level patterns visible
  • Work directly with the Economist to implement and update scoring methodologies — you need to understand what you're building, not just build it

AI-Assisted Development & Automation

  • Use AI coding tools — including Claude Code — to automate workflows, accelerate development, and reduce manual overhead
  • Build internal tools that support the research and policy team
  • Identify where automation can replace repetitive technical work
  • Stay current with how AI agents are changing what a small technical team can build and maintain

System & Infrastructure Thinking

  • Think beyond individual features — own the architecture, the pipelines, the deployment, the whole system
  • Document what you build so it doesn't live only in your head
  • Proactively flag technical debt and propose fixes before they become problems

Who You Are

  • 2+ years of development experience — you've built and maintained real systems, not just prototypes
  • Proficient in React and Python; comfortable with databases (PostgreSQL/Supabase or similar)
  • You've worked with GIS or mapping tools and can produce clean, publication-ready maps
  • You're comfortable using AI coding agents like Claude Code as a core part of your workflow — not occasionally, but daily
  • You can read a policy brief and understand why the data architecture behind it matters
  • You're self-directed — you notice what's broken, fix it, and tell the team

Bonus

  • Familiarity with Indian government data systems (PLFS, Census, ASI) or public policy data
  • Experience building tools for researchers or non-technical users
  • Prior work in civic tech, data journalism, or public interest technology

The bar is simple: Can you maintain a live public platform, build new features with AI assistance, keep the data clean, and explain to a policy researcher why something works the way it does?
