This role supports HeritageSGs mission by providing strategic leadership in archaeological research beyond excavation, with a focus on artefact-based and scientific analysis. It strengthens knowledge of Singapores early history while shaping future excavation strategies, collections management, policy development, and long-term heritage stewardship.
What You'll Do
As Head of Archaeology, you will provide strategic leadership in archaeological research beyond excavation, with a focus on artefact-based and scientific analysis. You will lead interdisciplinary research, develop and deliver archaeology, engage key stakeholders and partners, and shape excavation strategies, collections management, policy development, and long-term heritage stewardship for Singapores archaeological heritage.
Key Responsibilities
- Set and implement the organisations archaeological strategy in alignment with its mission, strategic priorities, and Board‑approved directions.
- Establish and uphold professional policies, standards, and SOPs to ensure ethical, high‑quality archaeological practice.
- Provide expert advice and reporting to senior management and, where required, Board and Board Committees on archaeological matters, risks, and opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with governance requirements, including approvals, documentation, and delegated authorities.
- Oversee archaeological research, post‑excavation analysis, and interpretation to ensure responsible stewardship of heritage assets held in public trust.
- Ensure artefacts, records, and data are properly processed, documented, and stored to support long‑term access and institutional memory.
- Guide research priorities, methodologies, and interpretive approaches to ensure academic rigour and organisational relevance.
- Oversee the quality and integrity of technical and interpretive outputs through robust review and quality assurance processes.
- Lead outreach and knowledge dissemination through scholarly and public platforms to enhance public understanding and appreciation of heritage.
- Build and sustain partnerships with academic, cultural, and community stakeholders to maximise public value and impact.
- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team, ensuring capability development, performance management, and succession planning.
- Manage budgets, resources, and procurement responsibly in line with approved budgets and governance requirements.
- Identify and manage operational, reputational, and research‑related risks, while driving continuous improvement and embedding lessons learned across programmes.
Requirements
- Postgraduate qualification (Masters or PhD) in archaeology, heritage studies, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Preferred at least 10 years in archaeology or heritage practice, including at least 3 years in leadership or management role.
- Experience working within or closely with public sector, museum, and archaeology is preferred.
- Experience in overseeing archaeological research, post‑excavation processes, and documentation standards.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multidisciplinary teams, budgets, and external service providers.
- Strong professional knowledge of archaeological practice, documentation, and interpretive methodologies.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Strategic, collaborative leader with a strong sense of stewardship, accountability, and stakeholder engagement.
