Job Descriptions:
We are seeking an experienced Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) to join our team in-house. This is a critical role responsible for the health, performance, security, and reliability of our SQL Server environment, which serves as the backbone of our Counterpoint point-of-sale and business operations platform. The successful candidate will take ownership of all SQL Server infrastructure, proactively monitor system health, and resolve issues before they impact business operations.
This role was identified as a critical gap following ongoing SQL replication and performance issues that have directly impacted system availability. The DBA will be the primary technical owner of all SQL-related systems.
Job Responsibilities:
SQL Server Administration & Health Monitoring
Monitor overall SQL Server health, performance, and availability on a daily basis
- Proactively identify and resolve SQL Server issues before they cause system outages
- Manage and monitor SQL Agent Jobs and Maintenance Plans, ensuring they execute successfully
Review and maintain SQL Server error logs, event logs, and system alerts
- Perform regular database integrity checks, index maintenance, and statistics updates
- Ensure adequate disk space, memory, and CPU resource allocation for SQL Server instances
Replication Management
- Manage and monitor SQL Server replication (transactional, merge, or snapshot as applicable)
Troubleshoot and resolve replication errors and latency issues promptly
- Document replication topology, subscriber/publisher configurations, and recovery procedures
- Implement alerts for replication failures with escalation procedures to prevent business downtime
CounterPoint & Business Application Support
- Serve as the SQL SME (Subject Matter Expert) for the CounterPoint point-of-sale platform
- Coordinate with CounterPoint support teams on SQL-related issues and escalations
- Investigate and resolve database issues that cause CounterPoint instability or non-functionality
- Maintain documentation of CounterPoint database schema, stored procedures, and custom objects
Backup, Recovery & Business Continuity
- Design, implement, and verify robust SQL Server backup strategies (full, differential, transaction log)
Test and document database restore procedures regularly
- Maintain and enforce Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)
- Ensure backup jobs are monitored and completed successfully; respond to backup failures immediately
Security & Compliance
- Manage SQL Server logins, roles, and permissions following least-privilege principles
Conduct periodic security audits of database access and permissions
- Apply SQL Server service packs, cumulative updates, and security patches on a regular schedule
Maintain compliance with internal data governance and security policies
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Document all existing SQL Server configurations, Agent Jobs, Maintenance Plans, and replication setups
- Establish and maintain a SQL Server runbook and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Recommend and implement improvements to database architecture, performance, and reliability
Provide regular status reports on SQL Server health to IT management
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of hands-on Microsoft SQL Server DBA experience (SQL Server 2016 or later)
- Demonstrated expertise in SQL Server replication (transactional replication strongly preferred)
- Strong proficiency in T-SQL, SQL Server Agent, and Maintenance Plan management
- Experience with SQL Server performance tuning, query optimization, and index management
- Solid understanding of SQL Server backup and recovery strategies
- Experience troubleshooting and resolving production SQL Server issues under pressure
- Ability to review and take ownership of an undocumented, inherited SQL environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with NCR CounterPoint or similar retail/POS platforms
Microsoft certifications: MCSA/MCSE Data Management, or DP-300 (Administering Relational Databases on Microsoft Azure)
- Experience with SQL Server high availability (Always On Availability Groups, Failover Clustering)
- Familiarity with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) or Integration Services (SSIS)
- Experience implementing SQL monitoring tools (SolarWinds DPA, Redgate SQL Monitor, SentryOne, etc.)
Prior experience inheriting and documenting legacy SQL environments

Work Timings: 7:30 pm - 4 am PKT (Monday - Friday) & Saturday (4 hours - Half Day)
