About the job Senior Test Automation Engineer (Playwright/TypeScript) - Portugal Full Remote (Preference Lisbon)

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Join a fast-growing, venture-backed consumer AI company building a digital learning platform used by more than 1.5 million students worldwide. The product is growing rapidly, with approximately 40,000–50,000 new students joining every week across markets including the UK, Ireland, Brazil, South Africa and Australia.

The company operates with a small, highly autonomous international team and has recently raised approximately $4M in seed funding from experienced technology investors and operators.

We are looking for a Senior Test Automation Engineer who can take strong ownership of automated quality assurance, particularly end-to-end testing with Playwright and TypeScript. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working closely with engineering, product and design teams in a fast-moving product environment.

The role can be performed remotely, with a strong preference for candidates based in Portugal, particularly in the Lisbon area, where the company also has an office.

PROJECT & CONTEXT

You will be responsible for strengthening and evolving the automated testing strategy of a high-growth consumer web and mobile product.

Your primary focus will be developing and maintaining comprehensive E2E test suites using Playwright, ensuring new features and critical user journeys are reliable before reaching a rapidly expanding user base.

You will work closely with software engineers, UX/UI designers and product owners to understand upcoming functionality, identify risks and define effective testing strategies.

The current technology environment includes Next.js 15+, React.js, React Native, Node.js, Nest.js, Expo, Prisma, Tailwind CSS and AWS. Automated testing is primarily developed using Playwright with TypeScript.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop and maintain automated E2E test suites using Playwright.
  • Create automated coverage for new features, pages and critical user workflows.
  • Validate functionality across web and mobile experiences.
  • Perform usability, performance, accessibility and cross-browser testing.
  • Identify regressions and quality risks early in the development lifecycle.
  • Maintain and continuously improve the existing testing infrastructure.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, product and UX/UI teams.
  • Help define testing standards, processes and quality engineering best practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to other QA/Test Engineers where required.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR (Required)

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a Test Engineer, QA Automation Engineer, SDET or similar.
  • Strong hands-on experience creating E2E automated tests with Playwright.
  • Strong proficiency with TypeScript.
  • Solid understanding of HTML5 and CSS3 fundamentals.
  • Experience testing modern JavaScript/TypeScript web applications.
  • Familiarity with React.js and Next.js 15+ applications.
  • Experience with Git and collaborative software development workflows.
  • Previous experience leading, mentoring or managing test/QA engineers.
  • Ability to define test strategies rather than only execute predefined test cases.
  • Strong understanding of regression testing, cross-browser testing and automated quality assurance.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, product-driven environment with a high level of ownership.
  • English: professional working proficiency required, as this is the primary working language of the international team.
  • Candidates must be based in a compatible European time zone, with Portugal strongly preferred and Lisbon considered the ideal location.

NICE TO HAVE (Preferred)

  • Based in Lisbon or surrounding areas.
  • Previous experience in an early-stage startup or scale-up environment.
  • Experience testing high-traffic B2C / consumer-facing products.
  • Experience with EdTech, AI-enabled products or subscription-based digital platforms.
  • Familiarity with React Native and mobile application testing.
  • Exposure to Node.js, Nest.js, Expo, Prisma or Tailwind CSS.
  • Experience working with applications deployed on AWS.
  • Knowledge of accessibility testing and performance testing practices.
  • Experience establishing or scaling QA automation practices in a rapidly growing engineering organisation.

Compensation: €2,400 – €3,150/month net, depending on experience and seniority level.
