Join a global technology consultancy supporting one of Europe's leading financial market infrastructure organizations operating stock exchanges across multiple countries. This mission-critical role offers the opportunity to work on database systems that power real-time trading platforms, clearing houses, and market data services handling billions in transactions daily. As a Senior Database Administrator, you'll support enterprise-scale AWS database environments ensuring 24/7 availability, optimal performance, and reliability for financial services that markets depend on. Operating in a hybrid model with 3 days in the Porto office, you'll integrate into an international team covering 10-hour shifts across 5 days per week, with on-call rotation approximately one week per month. This position provides exceptional exposure to cutting-edge AWS database technologies at unprecedented scale, working alongside expert database professionals on international projects where your technical decisions directly influence current and future technology choices for critical financial infrastructure.
PROJECT & CONTEXT
You'll provide comprehensive 360° support for the database layer across multiple services and technologies within a high-availability, mission-critical financial environment. Your responsibilities span installation and configuration of AWS database services, performance tuning and optimization, query analysis and improvement, and workload management across distributed systems. Working with AWS RDS and Aurora (both PostgreSQL and MySQL variants) and Redshift data warehousing solutions, you'll ensure databases maintain peak performance under demanding transactional loads while meeting strict SLA requirements. The role involves participating in international projects with cross-functional teams, troubleshooting complex database issues in real-time trading environments, implementing monitoring and alerting strategies, and proactively identifying optimization opportunities. You'll collaborate with development teams on query optimization, capacity planning for growth, disaster recovery planning, and contribute to architectural decisions that shape the database strategy for one of Europe's most important financial market operators.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR (Required)
- Database Experience: 5+ years proven track record supporting mission-critical database environments in production
- AWS RDS & Aurora: Strong hands-on experience with AWS RDS and Aurora for both PostgreSQL and MySQL engines
- Redshift Expertise: Solid background with AWS Redshift data warehouse deployment, configuration, and optimization
- Installation & Configuration: Proficiency in database installation, configuration, and infrastructure setup on AWS
- Performance Tuning: Advanced skills in database performance analysis, tuning, and optimization for high-volume workloads
- Query Optimization: Expertise analyzing and optimizing SQL queries for improved performance and resource utilization
- Workload Management: Experience managing database workloads, resource allocation, and capacity planning
- AWS Proficiency: Deep understanding of AWS database services architecture, best practices, and operational procedures
- High Availability: Experience designing and maintaining highly available database systems with minimal downtime
- Shift Work: Availability to work 10-hour shifts, 5 days per week as part of team rotation
- On-Call Duty: Willingness to participate in on-call rotation (approximately one week per month)
- Language: B2 English (Upper Intermediate) minimum - essential for international team collaboration and documentation
- Problem-Solving: Strong troubleshooting skills for complex database issues in production environments
- Location: Based in Porto with availability for 3 on-site days per week
NICE TO HAVE (Preferred)
- Experience with AWS S3 for database backups, data lakes, and object storage integration
- Knowledge of AWS IAM for database access control, security policies, and role management
- Familiarity with AWS Lambda for database automation, scheduled tasks, and event-driven processes
- Experience with AWS CloudWatch for database monitoring, alerting, and performance metrics
- Background in financial services, trading systems, or market data environments
- Understanding of compliance requirements in regulated financial industries
- Experience with database migration tools and strategies (AWS DMS, SCT)
- Knowledge of database replication, clustering, and failover strategies
- Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation) for database provisioning
- Experience with database security best practices, encryption, and audit logging
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines for database deployments
- Scripting skills in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation tasks
- Previous experience working in 24/7 operations environments
