Huxley Bertram Engineering Limited is looking for a capable and detail focused Import & Export Officer to coordinate the company's international trade and customs activity. This role is central to ensuring that machines, assemblies, parts, and spares are exported and imported compliantly and efficiently to customers and partners globally.
This position will suit someone with practical experience in import/export, customs, or international shipping who enjoys working closely with engineering and operations teams. The role is intended to be part time (c. ~24-32 hours per week), with flexibility for the right candidate.

What You'll Do
As Import & Export Officer, you will be responsible for coordinating and managing Huxley Bertram's international import and export activity. Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating the overseas shipment and import of machines, assemblies, parts, spares, and returns.
- Preparing, checking, and submitting all required import and export documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, and supporting declarations.
- Ensuring correct tariff classification, valuation, and description of goods, in line with customs procedures, customs legislation and customer requirements.
- Liaising with freight forwarders, customs brokers, couriers, Chambers of Commerce, and other external parties to ensure shipments move smoothly.
- Maintaining accurate import/export records and logs, and reconciling shipments against customs or government systems.
- Managing and resolving customs queries, shipment delays, agent errors, and regulatory issues as they arise.
- Providing clear guidance to internal teams where additional documentation, approvals, or lead times are required.
- Supporting the maintenance and improvement of import/export procedures, templates, and working practices.
Who You Are
We're looking for a practical, organised, and reliable Import & Export Officer. You are likely to bring:
- Proven experience in import/export, international shipping, or customs related administration, ideally in an engineering or manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of international trade and export procedures.
- BCC accredited training (e.g. Incoterms®, export documentation) or the BCC Foundation Award in International Trade.
- A solid working understanding of customs documentation, Incoterms, Customs Special Procedures, and harmonised tariff system.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with confidence dealing with external agents and internal stakeholders.
- High attention to detail and a methodical approach to compliance driven work.
- The ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and manage issues calmly in a part time role.
- Comfort using Office 365 tools and other business tools, like ClickUp, to manage records and documentation.
