enable engineering transformation at Huxley Bertram

Huxley Bertram Engineering Limited designs and builds bespoke machinery and automated equipment for clients operating in high technology and regulated sectors, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, energy, research, and nuclear.

We are seeking a capable, solutions-oriented Digital Transformation and Systems Intern to support the early-stage delivery of Huxley Bertram's evolving digital strategy. The role will involve mapping current ways of working, improving digital organisation and governance, supporting tool adoption, and helping to identify practical opportunities for better connected systems, reporting, and automation. The role is central to enabling meaningful, sustainable digital improvement across the business.

The role offers an excellent opportunity for an undergraduate to gain meaningful work experience, develop practical skills, and build exposure across a broad range of disciplines spanning technology, process, data, and business improvement.

Why Huxley Bertram

Founded in 1979, Huxley Bertram has delivered over 1,000 engineered solutions worldwide. We combine innovation, practicality, and simplicity to solve complex engineering challenges.

We encourage collaborative working, professional autonomy, and continuous improvement. Our work is technically challenging and varied, offering opportunities to develop skills across electrical, mechanical, and control disciplines.

In 2024, the company transitioned to an Employee Benefit Trust, reflecting our long-term commitment to our people, sustainability, and shared success.

What You'll Do

As our Digital Transformation and Systems Intern you'll support early-stage delivery of HB's evolving digital strategy—mapping, documentation, prioritisation and small pilots (rather than big bang transformation). You can expect a varied, hands-on mix of activities such as:

  • Map and document how work gets done today: capture current systems, tools, data flows, and pain points across departments, helping create a baseline view we can improve from.
  • Support practical digital governance, help organise information, naming conventions, where things live, and how we create a clearer single source of truth mindset
  • Help accelerate ClickUp adoption and ways of working: tidy structures, improve usability, and help teams get value from task/project tracking and reporting
  • Explore less Excel / more connected systems opportunities: identify repeat manual steps and propose simpler, more robust alternatives
  • Investigate integration and reporting options (with support from the team): where it helps, explore connectors/APIs and automation ideas (e.g., Power Automate / reporting improvements) and document workable approaches
  • Support early digital pilots: help run small experiments (e.g., meeting notes/transcription practices, AI usage patterns, lightweight reporting) and capture what worked, what didn't, and what to do next
  • Contribute to digital theme workstreams as needed—examples already identified include data governance, AI tools, cybersecurity foundations, SharePoint/storage, core systems, meeting transcription/AI notes, and connectivity/reporting.

Who You Are

We're looking for a smart, practical, IT‑savvy student—someone who enjoys learning new tools and figuring out how we could do this better, and who can communicate clearly with different teams.

You're likely a 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate (mid‑course) looking for a meaningful summer placement where you can build real-world digital experience.

Your degree could be engineering, business, operations, IT, or a related field—we're not only looking for computer science specialists; we're looking for someone who can bridge people, process and tech.

You're curious about digital tools and technology in organisations—how information flows, how teams collaborate, and how automation/reporting can remove friction.

You're comfortable being hands-on and proactive: you can gather input, structure messy information, and turn it into clear notes, simple process maps, and practical recommendations.

You're a confident communicator: able to work with different stakeholders, ask good questions, and present your findings clearly and professionally.

You're happy working in an environment where we're building capability internally (not outsourcing everything): you'll help us learn, document, and embed improvements so they stick.

Nice to have (not essential): familiarity with tools like Microsoft 365, SharePoint, ClickUp, Power BI, Power Automate, or an interest in AI tools and how teams use them productively.

Why You'll Love Working with Us

Here's what you can expect:

  • Holidays: pro-rata 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
