PropTech company building an intelligent IoT and software platform for the multifamily housing industry. The engineering org is transitioning to an AI-first development model. Client name shared upon mutual qualification.

The Role Reporting to the CTO, the Director of Engineering will lead multiple teams across backend, web, mobile, IoT platform, embedded firmware, and DevOps. This is a hands-on technical leadership role with ownership of platform architecture, delivery operations, and the company's adoption of AI-augmented development workflows and autonomous coding agents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and scale engineering teams; mentor managers, tech leads, and senior engineers
  • Define cloud-native AWS architecture for distributed systems supporting large connected-device fleets
  • Own the SDLC: CI/CD, IaC, observability, and engineering performance metrics
  • Drive adoption of AI-powered tools across planning, code generation, testing, CI/CD, and monitoring
  • Partner with the CTO on platform roadmap and emerging-tech evaluation

Tech Environment

  • Cloud: AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, Aurora, ECS/EKS, IoT Core, Step Functions)
  • Backend: .NET (C#), Python, Node.js
  • Apps: Angular (web), React Native (mobile)
  • IoT/Embedded: Linux, FreeRTOS; Z-Wave, BLE, Wi-Fi, Cellular
  • DevOps: CDK / CloudFormation / Terraform

Required

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience; 5+ years in engineering leadership
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, .NET/C#, Python, and Node.js
  • Proven track record designing distributed systems and microservices
  • Experience leading distributed teams and modern CI/CD practices

Preferred

  • AWS certifications (Solutions Architect or DevOps)
  • Experience integrating AI coding assistants (Claude, Copilot, Cursor, Bedrock) or agentic dev frameworks
  • IoT/embedded background: AWS IoT Core, Embedded C/C++, wireless protocols (Z-Wave, BLE, Wi-Fi, Cellular, LoRaWAN)
