A specialist Ophthalmology practice in Northcliff, Johannesburg is seeking to recruit an experienced Senior Ophthalmic Assistant with an interest in ocular pathology. The role requires a clinically skilled and detail oriented professional who can support diagnostic procedures, patient care, theatre preparation, and administrative coordination within a specialist ophthalmic environment.

Roles and Responsibilities (but not limited to):

  • Manage patient flow and assist with patient care
  • Obtain patient history and perform visual acuity assessments
  • Conduct ophthalmic testing and imaging including OCT, colour montages, glaucoma testing, NFLA, and visual fields
  • Perform fluorescein angiographies
  • Prepare patients for procedures and assist during injections and laser treatments
  • Administer ophthalmic or oral medication under ophthalmologist guidance
  • Maintain electronic medical notes and reporting
  • Manage patient queries, follow ups, and post operative communication
  • Prepare sterile packs and maintain autoclaving procedures
  • Support cataract surgery list preparation, consent, information, and authorisations
  • Assist with stock control, stock ordering, and equipment service tracking
  • Follow infection control and emergency protocols
  • Assist with bookings, billing, and medical aid queries
  • Support administrative duties and answer calls when required

Qualification and Requirements:

  • Optometrist or Ophthalmic Assistant qualification essential
  • Proven ophthalmic assistant experience essential
  • Experience with visual acuity testing, fundus photography, OCT, and visual fields essential
  • Strong computer literacy

Work Hours:
