PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To perform the required metallurgical tests and analyses while maintaining safety practices, procedures and good housekeeping in the Metallurgical Laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12 /Std 10 (NQF 4) with Mathematics and Physical Science is essential.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a B1 Plant operator in the Metallurgical Lab Department Processing is essential.
  • Supervisory experience desirable
  • Valid Medical certificate or medically fit to obtain such a certificate.
  • Valid First Aid certificate will be advantageous.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Demonstrate knowledge pertaining to basic health and safety principles in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of metallurgical laboratory procedures and safe work practices.
  • Competency in operating and maintaining lab equipment including Batch milling, Batch Flotation, Filtration, Drying, Titration, Particle Size Analysis.
  • Experienced in sample preparation techniques and managing large sets of sample campaign samples.
  • MS Office. (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Effective communication and time management skills.
  • Ability to train and supervise Laboratory Operators and Graduate Students.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • Conduct monthly inspections of lab equipment and report deviations. Assist with corrective actions and ensure safe operation.
  • Collect and prepare plant and Quality Control samples.
  • Conduct metallurgical tests including Batch Flotation, Particle Size Analysis, and Titrations.
  • Conduct sample campaigns and determine best sampling techniques and equipment across the operations based on needs.
  • Adhere to safety practices and good housekeeping.
  • Chair toolbox talks.
  • Record and report results of all in-house tests and assist in plant campaigns and project work as required by the Laboratory Foreman and Metallurgical engineer.
  • Support and supervise Laboratory Operators and Graduate Students in daily tasks and safety practices.
  • Maintain and monitor inventory of Laboratory consumables, chemicals, PPE, and equipment. Report shortages or irregularities to the Laboratory Foreman to ensure timely replenishment.
