PURPOSE OF THE JOB:   To provide medical services and support under the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

    • Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Medicine and Sugary (MBChB) degree is essential
    • Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine and Health is essential
    • Registered with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an (OMP) is essential
    • Minimum 5 years registration as an independent medical practitioner of which 3 years must be working as occupational medical practitioner (OMP) is essential
    • Biological Monitoring and Emergency care experience is essential
    • Experience in undertaking Health Risk Assessment s is essential
    • 2 Years working as OMP within South African Mining industry is desirable
    • Computer literacy is essential
    • Valid Medical certificate or medically fit to obtain such a certificate

COMPETENCIES:

    • Must have good interpersonal skills
    • Legislative knowledge - Medical (personnel; facilities; medical aid; occupational health); Mine health & safety is essential
    • Attention to detail
    • Knowledge of industry standard, best practises and trends in Occupational Medicine

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

    • Ensures that appropriate professional assessment, placement, investigation and diagnoses of employees undergoing medical surveillance takes place.
    • Performs medical surveillance in accordance with minimum standards to perform work in a mine and other regulatory framework related to the scope of occupational medicine.
    • Conducts diagnosis, offer treatment, referrals ad reporting of occupational diseases and injuries as per legislative requirement.
    • Complies and submits reports, including annual medical reports as per the legal and other company requirement.
    • Manages incapacity and disability cases including return to work recommendation.
    • Handles special cases as referred by the Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources (DMPR)
    • Participates in both internal and external professional forums
    • Monitors and treats chronic health conditions
    • Conducts educational awareness campaigns on Occupational Health programs within Impala Western Limbs Road shows.
    • Compiles, maintains, review Code of Practice (COP), standards, and procedures related to Occupational Health.
    • Ensures compliance with relevant legislative requirements such as the MHSA, COIDA, ETC.
    • Research and benchmarks on appropriate Occupational Health Services e.g. incapacity, primary health care etc.
    • Participates in various projects as identified in the HR strategy as well as Employee Wellness projects such as substance and drug abuse, stress management and incapacity management etc.
