PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To safely develop, cut, fabricate/assemble, weld, and maintain metal components.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12 (with Mathematics and Physical Science) or NQF 4 equivalent
  • Recognised relevant Trade Qualification (Section 13/26D).
  • 3 years Boilermaker experience in a mining environment.
  • NTC 2 (relevant Trade Theory, specialised courses) is advantageous.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Demonstrate knowledge pertaining to basic health and safety principles in the workplace
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of development.
  • Identify engineering materials, their characteristics and applications and common metal tests used in engineering
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of fabricationUse welding definitions and symbols

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and fabricates from complex drawings.
  • Marks off basic regular engineering shapes.
  • Cuts, drills and punches, assembles and mechanically joins structural steel work.
  • Cuts materials using the oxy-fuel gas cutting process (manual cutting) or hand tools (Cold Chisel and tin snips).
  • Assembles and mechanically joins sheets, plates, tubes, pipes, and steel sections.
  • Forms and shapes sheets, plates, pipes, and structural sections using power machinery.
  • Performs heat treatment processes on engineering metals.
  • Replaces steelwork in shafts.
  • Welds workpieces with a variety of welding methods in all positions.
  • Removes metals by means of gouging processes.
  • Performs non-destructive tests on metal parts and components.
  • Replaces conveyor belting and components on conveyor belt installations.
  • Operates cranes (Gantry - limited tonnage).
  • Performs routine maintenance on: Mills including all its auxiliaries, Compressors, Pumps, Crushers, Conveyors, Furnaces, spray and flash dryers, converters, and acid plant equipment.
  • Completes logbooks and check sheets.
  • Adheres to safety regulations and mine standards, procedures and practices and reports non-compliance.
  • Participates in regular safety meetings and makes recommendations to ensure overall safety.
  • Performs regular inspections in area of work and report hazards to ensure environment is safety and hazard free and recommends remedial action where necessary.
