DEPARTMENT : ROCK ENGINEERING - SHAFTS

PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To ensure a safe mining practise with regards to strata control through the management of mining layouts and evaluation of ground conditions; and the management of standards and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12(NQF Level 4) with Maths and Science is essential.
  • Chamber of Mines Strata Control Certificate is essential.
  • Parts of Chamber of Mines Rock Mechanic certificate would be considered advantageous.
  • Computer literacy MS office is essential.
  • 2 years mining and stoping experience as Strata Control Technician or Observer is essential.
  • Valid medical certificate or be medically fit in order to obtain such a certificate.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Report writing skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of basic Strata Control principles is essential.
  • Must have knowledge of Rock Engineering functions and activities.
  • Attention to detail, self-disciplined and technical skills are essential.
  • Communication skills with all levels is considered an advantage

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • Provide a support function to production personnel during the planning process and the day-to-day running of the mine.
  • Monitor ground movement and ground conditions, assess areas reported as having encountered adverse ground conditions and assist the Senior Rock Engineering Officer with making recommendations.
  • Participate in workplace start-up assessments, assess prevailing ground conditions, check support effectiveness and compliance to standards and recommend required actions prior to commencing work.
  • Assist with ensuring the Impala safe mining standards and procedures are implemented and enforced.
  • Coordinate and manage subordinates daily work functions, evaluate their performance, and coach them.
  • Investigate the causes of rock-related accidents and incidents and recommend remedial action.
  • Coach production personnel on strata control hazards, risks, principles, and procedures.
