PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To assist the processing unit in achieving set business plan targets by monitoring and optimising plant performance, planning and implementing new initiatives as well as guiding subordinates and colleagues on all technical matters related to metallurgy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • A BSc/B.Tech/B.Eng. Degree in Extraction Metallurgy or Chemical Engineering or NQF7 is essential
  • Must have at least 3 years extensive smelting experience and a good understanding of refractory materials
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is essential.
  • Knowledge of Process managing and monitoring Software (e.g. SAP and Aspen Process explorer) would be advantageous
  • Valid Medical Certificate is essential or be medically fit to obtain such a certificate.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Sound practical understanding of the various unit processes within Metallurgy in order to enhance their operational performance is essential
  • Interpersonal, influencing and communication skills is essential
  • Must be able to demonstrate analytical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the Mines Health and Safety Act and other relevant legislation will be an advantage.
  • Must have an ability to lead and work effectively with people and a wide range of stakeholders within the business.
  • High energy and level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and the team is essential.
  • Demonstrated capability in organising work, setting priorities and exercising sound independent judgement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate rebuilds and taphole repairs
  • Quality assurance and management of refractory materials
  • Coordinate trial work on refractory materials
  • Identify areas with opportunities to optimise performance and plan and implement initiatives and projects.
  • Manage and maintain business plan targets on plant consumables.
  • Coach and mentor junior metallurgists and students.
