Assistant General Manager (Technical Operations)
We are looking for a hands-on and experienced Assistant GM (Technical Operations) for a well-established marine product & services company. The AGM (Technical Operations) will lead the company's after-sales service and technical operations. This role will focus on engine troubleshooting, repair quality, and technical team leadership, ensuring high service standards and customer satisfaction.
The successful candidate must have a strong engineering background, be technically hands-on, and possess strong working knowledge of 4-stroke marine engines, power generators, and marine auxiliary machinery/equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & After-Sales Operations
- Lead and manage the after-sales service team, including engineers and technicians
- Oversee troubleshooting, repair, overhaul, and maintenance of 4-stroke marine engines, generators, and auxiliary equipment
- Act as the technical escalation point for complex or critical issues
- Ensure high standards of workmanship, safety, and service quality
Workshop & Field Service Management
- Oversee workshop operations and field service deployment
- Ensure timely turnaround for repairs and service jobs
- Support engineers on-site where required for major breakdowns or overhauls
Customer Support & Service Excellence
- Work closely with customers to resolve technical issues and ensure satisfaction
- Handle escalations professionally, including urgent vessel-down situations
- Provide technical advice and recommendations to customers
Spare Parts & Service Coordination
- Work closely with the spares team to ensure parts availability for service jobs
- Support identification of required parts for overhaul and maintenance work
- Ensure alignment between service jobs and parts consumption
P&L Accountability
- Own the P&L of the Technical & After-Sales division, including service revenue, labour costs, parts margins, and overhead management
- Set and monitor divisional KPIs including revenue targets, gross margin, job turnaround time, and service utilisation rates
- Prepare and manage annual budgets for the technical division, track actuals vs. budget and report variances to senior management
- Identify opportunities to grow service revenue — including new service contracts, preventive maintenance programmes, and value-added after-sales offerings
- Drive cost efficiency across workshop operations, field service deployment, and parts usage without compromising quality
People Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of service engineers and technicians
- Build a strong hands-on and accountable team culture
- Support recruitment and retention of technical staff
Principal & Stakeholder Management
- Liaise with principals (e.g. engine makers) on technical matters, warranty, and support
- Coordinate with overseas engineers (including China-based teams if applicable)
Requirements
- Degree / Diploma in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent technical qualification with strong hands-on marine engineering exposure.
- Strong technical knowledge and hands-on familiarity in 4-stroke marine engines, power generators & marine auxiliary equipment / machinery
- Proven leadership track record leading a sizeable team in a similar industry setting, preferably within marine engineering services and engine services, or related after-market environments.
- Strong people leadership skills — able to motivate, coach, develop and retain talent.
- High integrity and professionalism, trusted to represent the company.
- Chinese language ability is an advantage (for engaging China-based engineers and stakeholders).
